Nathan Lyon is a superstar for Australia in red ball cricket, but the same cannot be said about his white ball heroics. Lyon is a classic off-spinner but he has not done justice to his reputation of being a strike bowler in ODI cricket. He got his ODI cap in 2012 against the visiting Sri Lanka side and in 6 years he has played only a handful of ties. Till now he has played 25 matches but has only 26 wickets in his kitty which is below par. Lyon can be a stock bowler who will provide the captain with an economical spell.

As Australia didn’t have a primary option after Zampa in the spin department, the selectors choose Lyon because of his experience in the international circuit. Lyon can go for plenty in flat pitches and that’s why Ashton Agar could have been a smart pick. Ashton Agar is a left arm off-spinner who can bat decently down the order. He has played 9 matches in which he has taken 8 wickets but has not been provided opportunities regularly. Adding Agar to the team will increase the depth of the line-up and he has the experience of bowling crucial spells for his BBL franchise Perth Scorchers.
