5 Players you don't know have bowled in international cricket

If one reads through the pages of the books of cricket history, there would be a number of batsmen, who had tormented the opposition with their flair and brutality. They managed to have great careers owing to their incredible levels of batting. As their career passed the test of times, they increased in stature and there was no looking back. Making runs became bread and butter for these batsmen. It’s because of their batting that their national teams thought twice before dropping them from the eleven. Some even have gone on to captain their teams. But at times, these batters have also been trusted to show their attributes with the ball in hand. The crowd also got a chance to see their favourites weave magic with the leather. Though some of them couldn’t get a wicket, they entertained all. In the article, let’s take a look at five cricketers, you didn’t know have bowled in international cricket: – 1. Sarfaraz Ahmed Sarfaraz Ahmed bowling. (Photo Source: Twitter) Sarfaraz Ahmed has mostly been in a news due to his captaincy for Pakistan and his batting prowess. Last year, he was axed as the national skipper and was also left out of the team. At the age of 32, the Karachi, Sind-born is still expected to have some cricket left ahead of him. The 32-year-old also bowls part-time off-breaks and has rolled his arms for 6.2 overs in his 13-year-old cricket career. Back in July 2008, Sarfaraz tried his hand in bowling for the first time. In the final ODI of the five-match series against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, he bowled a couple of overs. To his dismay, he gave away 15 runs and was Pakistan’s most expensive bowler on the day. He was also hit for a six over the mid-wicket boundary by Peter Moor. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pick up a wicket in his entire career. 2. Tamim Iqbal Tamim Iqbal. Having scored over 13,300 runs for the Tigers, the left-hander has managed to put his best foot forward. The Chittagong-born has also tried his luck out in bowling. Overall, Tamim has bowled 46.1 overs, but at the highest level, he has rolled his arms over for six overs. In fact, he has bowled an over each in five Test matches from 2008 to 2012. Tamim’s first ball in ODI cricket wasn’t quite a memorable one. In an ODI versus South Africa in Dhaka, AB de Villiers smashed him downtown for a six and helped the Proteas to a seven-wicket victory. Then again in 2010, he bowled against Sri Lanka and yet another time, the winning shot was hit off his bowling. 3. Gautam Gambhir Gautam Gambhir bowling. (Photo Source: YouTube) Gautam Gambhir is mostly known for the knocks he played in the 2007 T20 World Cup final in Johannesburg and the 2011 50-over World Cup final in Mumbai. Apart from his prowess with the bat, the Delhi-born was a handy leg-break bowler as well. At the first-class level, he has eight wickets from 72.2 overs in 748 matches. In fact, he has a three-wicket haul to his name in red-ball cricket. The now 38-year-old also had the privilege of rolling his arms over for Team India. He got the first chance in the ODI against England back in 2006 in Faridabad. He gave away 13 runs with a no-ball and wide and that was his final over in the format. Then the tweaker was entrusted for a couple of overs in the 2012 Nagpur Test versus the Three Lions where he gave away only four runs. 4. Nasser Hussain Nasser Hussain. (Photo Source: Twitter) Nasser Hussain was one of the most enigmatic captains England have produced. He managed to dictate terms to the opposition, both as a leader and as a batsman. The Chennai-born scored over 8,000 runs for the Brits in a career which spanned 14 years from 1990 to 2004. But apart from his batting, Hussain was also a handy leg-spinner. In fact, in first-class cricket, he picked up a couple of wickets. Even in international cricket, he has tried his hand in bowling. Back in December 1999, during the Test match against South Africa at the Kingsmead in Durban, Hussain gave a glimpse of his bowling abilities. In the final innings of the game, the visitors used nine bowlers, one of whom was Hussain. He bowled five overs and gave away 15 runs. That turned out to be the only time when he bowled. 5. Hashim Amla Hashim Amla. (Photo by Chris Hyde/Getty Images) Hashim Amla hung his boots from international cricket back in 2019 after notching 18,672 runs for South Africa. He was a bedrock of the Proteas batting unit in all the three formats. The fact he had an average in the high 40s in ODIs and Test cricket showed his impact for the national team at the highest level. The Durban-born Amla was also an occasional medium pacer and an off-break bowler. The now 37-year-old bowled 48.5 overs across List A, first-class and T20 cricket. Nine of those overs came in international cricket. He first bowled against New Zealand in his seventh Test itself. The highest number of overs he bowled was against the West Indies at Durban in 2008 when he sent down three overs. It was in 2012 versus Australia when Amla last bowled for the South Africans.
