5. Lack of Specialists or too many all-rounders

The role of an all-rounder is essential in cricket nowadays. They are essentially in every format especially the white ball format. But at the end of the day specialists are of utmost importance in the team.

An all-rounder is usually bits and pieces player in comparison to a specialist who can certainly give you either 50 -60 runs or 3-4 wickets. The consistency level of a specialist is usually high as compared to an all-rounder. Joe Root who is the skipper of the England team and plays as a specialist batsman has played 24 matches in 2018, scoring 946 runs with an average close to 60. Adil Rashid the leggie from England has played 24 matches with 42 wickets at an impressive average of 27.47 in the same year.

Now, at the moment the England squad has too many all-rounders for their liking. An all-rounder will definitely win you matches here and there, but a specialist is bound to perform more consistently for your team and win you more matches. A Bits and pieces player may use the long handle when required but when it comes to building the innings in tricky conditions then the role of the specialist comes into play. Similarly, a death bowling specialist is a much better option than a bits and pieces player.
