1. Fastest fifty by an Indian wicketkeeper
Rahul Dravid has a special connection with the Hyderabad’s L.B. Stadium while playing for the Indian team. He scored a century while leading India in a Youth Test at this venue in 1992 against New Zealand. Seven years later, Dravid recorded his highest ODI score at this venue against the Blackcaps only. Dravid extended his love with the stadium when India played the New Zealand team in an ODI in 2003.
Rahul showed a different angle in his batting as he smashed 5 fours and 3 sixes on his way to an unbeaten 50 off 22 balls. His 22-ball fifty remains as the joint 2nd fastest for India in the ODI format standing only behind Ajit Agarkar’s effort in 21 deliveries. Since this half-century by Dravid, only one Indian managed to score a fifty inside 25 deliveries in the 50-over format – Yuvraj Singh in 2004 against Bangladesh.
Dravid’s fastest ODI fifty is also the quickest fifty by a wicketkeeper for India in ODI cricket. The next fastest fifty by an Indian is off 26 balls by MS Dhoni which came against England in Cardiff during India’s horror 2011 tour. The 22-ball fifty from Rahul Dravid is also the fastest fifty in International cricket by an Indian wicketkeeper. Another Rahul from Karnataka, KL Rahul, came close to breaking his idol’s record when he scored a 23-ball fifty in the Auckland T20I earlier this year which was also against New Zealand.
