Rohit Sharma– the swashbuckling Indian opener has carved his niche over the years in his playing career. From getting overlooked from the 2011 World Cup squad to shellacking tons in the 2019 World Cup– the right-hander has undoubtedly become an indispensable part of India squad since making his debut.
The Mumbaikar has etched many records in his career and his stats across all formats prove his worth with the willow. After breaking into the Indian side in 2007, Rohit left no stones unturned to dazzle at the international level. Impeccable timing, varied range of shots and ability to fire off from the word go– Rohit has managed to make his presence felt on the international stage. In a career spanning over 224 ODIs, the explosive batsman has amassed 9115 runs at an impressive average of 49.27. He also has 29 tons and 43 half-centuries under his belt.
Rohit has exhibited in T20Is too as he has gathered 2773 runs in the shorter format with an average of 32.62 including four tons and 21 half-centuries. Leading Mumbai Indians from the front, the top-order batsman has also emerged as one of the successful aspects of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He proved his worth with the red ball too as after being promoted as a Test opener against South Africa in October 2019, Rohit shellacked two tons in both innings to steer India to the victory.
In a career spanning over a decade now, Rohit has etched many records and a few records are tough to break for many individuals.
Here are the five records:
1. Highest individual score in ODIs
November 13 2014– Rohit Sharma dismantled the Sri Lankan bowling force and became the third batsman after Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar to smash a double century in ODIs. The explosive opener struck 33 boundaries and 9 sixes and posted 264 — the highest-ever One-day International score.
After cruising to a 100-ball ton, Rohit put his foot on the gas pedal and raced to 264 in just 173 deliveries and smashed 164 runs in just 73 balls. The Sri Lankan bowling force was left hapless in front of his aggressive approach and the Indian side, on the back of Rohit’s knock, posted a mammoth score of 404 on the board. The Sri Lankan batting force succumbed to the pressure and could only amass 251 runs on the board.
After being dropped on 4, Rohit Sharma ensured that he made the full use of the opportunity and guide his side to the victory. The world witnessed one-of-a-kind knock when the right-hander went bonkers at Eden Gardens. After witnessing this breath-taking knock, there is a possibility that no other player could break this impressive record of Rohit. Even the explosive players of the current era like David Warner and Virat Kohli will have to struggle for reaching the 264-run mark in an ODI inning.
