India’s campaign in the World T20 ended at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Thursday night after a defeat to a determined West Indian side. India had played brilliantly in Australia in the T20I series, won it by 3-0 and then beat Sri Lanka 2-1 at home, which was followed by an unbeaten run in the Asia Cup T20 in Bangladesh. The team entered the World T20 as strong favourites, however, couldn’t dominate as was expected. India scratched their way through to the semi-final and ultimately ran out of luck. It was a disappointing campaign for a well balanced side that made some basic errors that cost them the game against the Windies. Here are the 5 takeaways for the Men in Blue:

The Indian top openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were guilty of taking too long to get on with the game throughout the competition and failed to give the team good starts. The latter was dropped for the semi-final and India finally got a strong start but the run-rate in the powerplay wasn’t as good as one expected on a flat track. When the first wicket fell in the 8th over the score was only 62. One has seen other teams like England, West Indies, South Africa and even Afghanistan managing more runs at the start in Mumbai. India needs openers who can get on with the game from the start in T20Is. While Rohit is still capable, the other opener’s slot is debatable.
