2019- Two-year suspension by the ICC
The biggest of Shakib’s controversies thus far came on October 29, 2019. The ICC meted out a two-year ban, one year of which already suspended, to one of the best all-rounders doing the rounds in world cricket. He failed to report three instances to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit where bookies approached him for corrupt practices.
He was also approached in the 2018 IPL where he played for SRH. Shakib has accepted three charges of breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct. He will only be able to return when his ban ends on October 29, 2020 if he satisfies the conditions in respect of the suspended part of the sanction.
Shakib wasn’t a happy man after the punishment and accepted that he didn’t perform his duty diligently. He will be working with the ACU to support their education programme and ensure that young players don’t make the same mistake.
