5 Times when Bangladesh players brought shame to cricket

Bangladesh have promised a whole lot in their cricketing journey. Though they don’t have a whole lot of trophies to show for their efforts, the team has given the best of sides a run for their money. In the 1999 World Cup, the Tigers beat Pakistan after which they marched ahead. Recently, the U19 team won their first major title, beating four-time champions India in the final at the Senwes Park. In the 2019 World Cup, they rolled over South Africa, though they were eventually knocked out before the semis. However, amidst some jaw-dropping run on the field, Bangladesh have also been guilty of crossing the line a few times. Their players have come under the scanner a number of times. Even the ICC has penalized them for their unruly and unsportsmanlike attitude on the field of play. In the article, let’s take a look at five instances when Bangladesh players marred their reputation: – 1. 2020 U19 World Cup final (Photo Source: Twitter) Bangladesh won the 2020 U19 World Cup in South Africa. But their campaign came to a close with a bit of a controversy at the Senwes Park. After the game ended, their cricketers had an on-field scuffle with the Boys in Blue. The unfortunate occurring somewhat overshadowed the Tigers show in the game that they won by three wickets. Priyam Garg, the India skipper, termed it as ‘dirty’. Akbar Ali, the Bangladesh skipper, apologized for the behaviour of their players. Three of their players- Rakibul Hasan, Towhid Hridoy and Shamim Hossain- had to bear the brunt of the ICC. They were slapped with suspension points, which will remain on their records for the next couple of years. The points will be applied to the upcoming international games they are likely to participate. 2. Mohammad Ashraful’s BPL match-fixing saga Mohammad Ashraful of Bangladesh. But nowadays, he is nowhere near to a place in the national squad, the reason being the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). There he admitted to spot-fixing during a game between Dhaka Gladiators and Chittagong Vikings. The country’s cricket board then suspended him immediately. Ashraful was alleged to have gotten $12,800 to lose a game, but as per the local media, the cheque he was given had bounced. In 2014, BCB banned him for eight years, which was reduced to five years. In 2016, he came back to domestic cricket and then became eligible to play international cricket in 2018. Even after the layoff, Ashraful hasn’t lost hopes of a comeback at the age of 35. 3. Shakib Al Hasan’s crotch controversy Shakib Al Hasan. (Photo Source: Twitter) Back in 2014, Shakib Al Hasan, who’s serving a ban from the ICC, got himself tangled in a controversy. On Live TV, he was caught, making inappropriate gestures towards his crotch. He was then slapped with a fine of $3,800 and was also banned for three matches. It occurred during a match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the iconic Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. While chasing 290, Shakib handed his wicket away to Ashan Priyanjan, a part-time bowler. He was batting on 24 when he unsuccessfully tried to clear long-off. The dismissal turned out to be a costly one as the hosts lost by 61. Ever since, Shakib has been a part of some ugly incidents, the latest being the suspension imposed on him on October 2019 after he failed to report corrupt approaches. 4. Mushfiqur Rahim’s post after India’s 2016 World T20 exit Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim. But back in 2016 during the World T20, he resorted to something that created an uproar, especially among the Indian fans. In one of the games in Bangalore, Mushfiqur couldn’t take his team through to win after Bangladesh needed two runs off the last three balls versus India. Tigers lost the game by one run. Then in the semis, the West Indies beat India in Mumbai and knocked the latter out of the tournament. In the meantime, Mushfiqur dropped a tweet where he can be seen following the semi-final. But then, his caption read, “Happiness is this… Now I can sleep much better. Windies u beauty!!!” Thereafter, Mushfiqur was severely criticised for his demeaning message towards India. 5. Even as the brand of cricket the Tigers played were highly appreciated, they were severely mocked for their celebrations. After they beat the hosts in Colombo to qualify for the final, their players celebrated, imitating the ‘naagin (snake) dance’. After India won the final, Bangladesh were ridiculed for their indifferent celebrations. In the same match, reports also emerged that the Tigers players’ broke glasses in the dressing room. It was learned that skipper Shakib Al Hasan created ruckus. Not only that, but Bangladesh also threatened to fortify a game after one of the on-field umpire’s decision didn’t quite go in their favour.
