Many current and former cricketers are very active on Twitter and Instagram these days.

In fact, a lot of players also freely express their views on social media platforms. However, there have also been quite a few banters on social media. Some of them have been friendly and some of them have taken drastic turns. In fact, there have been Twitter (or social media) wars as well.

Thus, here we look at six instances when cricketers have engaged in social media wars and have fought on social media.

1. Herschelle Gibbs and Ravichandran Ashwin

It is quite normal for sportspersons to put out promotional tweets and promote certain products. However, there are times when the fans perceive it in a different sense/way. But back in February 2018, Herschelle Gibbs saw the lighter side of Ravichandran Ashwin’s tweet. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner was promoting Nike’s new pair of shoes (NIKE React). He tweeted a video as he promoted the brand-new product.

However, Gibbs tried to pull Ashwin’s leg by commenting on his running. Gibbs replied to the tweet by saying, “Hopefully you will be able to run a bit faster now ashwin.” Ashwin seemed pretty miffed and took a jib at Gibbs as he replied with spot-fixing comment. “I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate,” Ashwin retweeted Gibbs’ tweet.

The former South Africa batsman replied that Ashwin couldn’t even take a joke properly. To which the Indian off-spinner replied that his reply was a joke too. This banter did not go well with the fans and Ashwin was criticized heavily on Twitter.

It is no secret that Michael Vaughan and Sanjay Manjrekar don’t share a great camaraderie. They have disagreed with each other on multiple occasions on social media. There have been times where they took constant digs at each other. The latest one being in the 2019 World Cup in England.

Manjrekar made the news for publicly criticizing Ravindra Jadeja who later lashed out at the former India player on Twitter. Ahead of India’s semi-final against New Zealand, Manjrekar put out his predicted team on Twitter which included Jadeja. Vaughan retweeted and said, “I have seen that you have picked that bits and pieces cricketer !!!”

The current Indian commentator was miffed and replied, “‘Predicted’ my dear Vaughan&#8230;not ‘my’ team.” It was then during the semi-final, Vaughan put out a couple of tweets when Jadeja was bowling well and termed him as ‘bits and pieces’ taking a jib at Manjrekar who reacted by blocking the former England captain on Twitter.

Kevin Pietersen and Mitchell Johnson have fought multiple battles on the field. The two former players were match-winners for their respective sides. However, they have fought wars on social media as well. During the 2017-18 Ashes series down under, the two former cricketers had a go at each other.

During one of his commentary stints, Pietersen was praising England’s fast bowlers. However, their failure prompted Johnson to give Pietersen some piece of his mind. Thus, the former left-arm fast bowler tweeted, “Hey @KP24 @MichaelVaughan yesterday were carrying on about the pommy fast bowlers being able to bowl in the 140’s. Ever since they’ve taken the second new ball they’ve been bowling medium pace. They are allowed to bend their backs, and there’s 4 of them #ashes #sweatbandswinger.”

This didn’t go down well with the former England superstar. He questioned Johnson’s and replied with a jib, “Mitchell, is this you or your management tweeting? If it’s you, you not helping yourself! If it’s your management, ask them to stop or sack them!”

Johnson then mocked Pietersen’s reply before he got himself blocked.

4. Aakash Chopra and Mitchell Johnson

During India’s tour to Australia in 2018-19, they lost only one Test match. That game was played in Perth and the pitch was rated ‘average’ by the ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle. The game was pretty interesting. However, there were multiple occasions where the ball rared up out of nowhere.

But Mitchell Johnson wasn’t happy with the match referee’s call. He slammed ICC for their call and expressed his disappointment on Twitter. He questioned as to what a good pitch would be and tweeted, “Nothing wrong with it. It was exciting to watch a contest between bat and ball for a change and not these dull flat tracks being served up constantly. I’d actually be interested in knowing what a good pitch is? Hope for another exciting test at the MCG.”

Aakash Chopra replied to the tweet and said, “Vihari bowled a bouncer on the ‘first day’ to dismiss a well set Harris. I rest my case.”

The former Aussie pacer couldn’t take this and lashed out at Chopra as he sent out a tweet, “Pretty shitty case if that what your coming with Aakash. You’re saying it was a dangerous delivery from a spinner? Did you pipe up when the Indian 4 man attack bowled plenty of short balls, which I enjoyed as a fan &amp; was awesome to watch? What is a good wicket is to you?”

The former Indian opener later justified his statement and explained his view. The two constantly went at each other as Johnson tried to justify that he has played on far worse pitches than the one India and Australia played in Perth. Moreover, he said that he wants to see an exciting contest between bat and ball. On the other hand, Chopra kept defending why ICC’s rating of the pitch was apt.

Aakash Chopra is pretty active on Twitter. He isn’t shy to express his views and has been trolled and criticized on multiple instances as well. In 2017, in one of his Q &amp; A sessions on Twitter, he was once asked about Sreesanth and his comeback chances. Chopra was pretty blunt and ruled out the Kerala pacer’s return.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan always aims to steal the limelight from the Indian audience. He recently stated that if Kane Williamson was an Indian, he would&#8217;ve been the greatest player in the world.

If Kane Williamson was Indian, he would be the greatest player in the world. But he’s not because you’re not allowed to say that Virat Kohli is not the greatest, because you’d get an absolute pelting on social media,&#8221; Vaughan told Spark Sport. &#8220;So, you all say Virat is the best purely to get few more clicks and likes, few more numbers following here. Kane Williamson, across formats, is equally the best. I think the way he plays, the calm demeanour, his humbleness, the fact that he is silent about what he does.&#8221;

To this, former Pakistan opener Salman Butt responded and slammed Vaughan. Butt said, &#8220;Kohli belongs to a county that has a huge population. On top of that, his performance is better too. Virat has 70 international tons at the moment, no other batsman from this era has that many. &#8220;And he has, for a long period, dominated the batting rankings because his performances have been outstanding. So, I don’t understand what and where is the need to draw comparisons,&#8221; Butt said.

&#8220;And who has compared the two? Michael Vaughan. He was a brilliant captain for England, but the beauty at which he used to bat, his output wasn&#8217;t on par. He was a good Test batsman but Vaughan never scored a single century in ODIs. &#8220;Now, as an opener, if you haven&#8217;t scored a century, it&#8217;s not worth discussion. It’s just that he has a knack for saying things that stir up a debate. Besides, people have a lot of time to stretch a topic,&#8221; he added.

This is very below-average, below-the-belt. If he wants to live in the past and wants to talk about it, he surely can. Constipation is an illness. Things get stuck and they don’t come out that easily. Some people have mental constipation. Their minds are in the past. That doesn’t matter,&#8221; Butt said on his YouTube channel.

During India’s tour to Australia in 2018-19, they lost only one Test match. That game was played in Perth and the pitch was rated ‘average’ by the ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle. The game was pretty interesting. However, there were multiple occasions where the ball rared up out of nowhere.
But Mitchell Johnson wasn’t happy with the match referee’s call. He slammed ICC for their call and expressed his disappointment on Twitter. He questioned as to what a good pitch would be and tweeted, “Nothing wrong with it. It was exciting to watch a contest between bat and ball for a change and not these dull flat tracks being served up constantly. I’d actually be interested in knowing what a good pitch is? Hope for another exciting test at the MCG.”
Aakash Chopra replied to the tweet and said, “Vihari bowled a bouncer on the ‘first day’ to dismiss a well set Harris. I rest my case.”

The former Aussie pacer couldn’t take this and lashed out at Chopra as he sent out a tweet, “Pretty shitty case if that what your coming with Aakash. You’re saying it was a dangerous delivery from a spinner? Did you pipe up when the Indian 4 man attack bowled plenty of short balls, which I enjoyed as a fan &amp; was awesome to watch? What is a good wicket is to you?”
The former Indian opener later justified his statement and explained his view. The two constantly went at each other as Johnson tried to justify that he has played on far worse pitches than the one India and Australia played in Perth. Moreover, he said that he wants to see an exciting contest between bat and ball. On the other hand, Chopra kept defending why ICC’s rating of the pitch was apt.

<h3>5. Sreesanth and Aakash Chopra</h3>

Aakash Chopra is pretty active on Twitter. He isn’t shy to express his views and has been trolled and criticized on multiple instances as well. In 2017, in one of his Q &amp; A sessions on Twitter, he was once asked about Sreesanth and his comeback chances. Chopra was pretty blunt and ruled out the Kerala pacer’s return.

The former Indian opener had said that Sreesanth was fit to play but he opined that when someone has been involved in spot-fixing, he should never be allowed to return. Sreesanth didn’t take this well as he called Chopra ‘two-faced’ for his comments. Chopra responded that it was his opinion and he stands by it, even if it were to be for his own brother.

Sreesanth once again took to Twitter and said that he will play for India again, no matter how small the chances are. The former Rajasthan cricketer wished the Kerala pacer well and Sreesanth replied that he was looking forward to playing and having Chopra in the commentary box.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan always aims to steal the limelight from the Indian audience. He recently stated that if Kane Williamson was an Indian, he would’ve been the greatest player in the world.
If Kane Williamson was Indian, he would be the greatest player in the world. But he’s not because you’re not allowed to say that Virat Kohli is not the greatest, because you’d get an absolute pelting on social media,” Vaughan told Spark Sport. “So, you all say Virat is the best purely to get few more clicks and likes, few more numbers following here. Kane Williamson, across formats, is equally the best. I think the way he plays, the calm demeanour, his humbleness, the fact that he is silent about what he does.”
To this, former Pakistan opener Salman Butt responded and slammed Vaughan. Butt said, “Kohli belongs to a county that has a huge population. On top of that, his performance is better too. Virat has 70 international tons at the moment, no other batsman from this era has that many. “And he has, for a long period, dominated the batting rankings because his performances have been outstanding. So, I don’t understand what and where is the need to draw comparisons,” Butt said.
“And who has compared the two? Michael Vaughan. He was a brilliant captain for England, but the beauty at which he used to bat, his output wasn’t on par. He was a good Test batsman but Vaughan never scored a single century in ODIs. “Now, as an opener, if you haven’t scored a century, it’s not worth discussion. It’s just that he has a knack for saying things that stir up a debate. Besides, people have a lot of time to stretch a topic,” he added.

Butt later reacted to Vaughan’s comments yet again.
“I don’t want to get into details. I just want to say that he’s picked the topic in the wrong context. There is no justification for a reaction like this. This is very below-average, below-the-belt. If he wants to live in the past and wants to talk about it, he surely can. Constipation is an illness. Things get stuck and they don’t come out that easily. Some people have mental constipation. Their minds are in the past. That doesn’t matter,” Butt said on his YouTube channel.
Vaughan was quick to respond to Butt’s latest comments.
