5 West Indies players to watch out for in CPL 2016

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is promising to be a fun filled and an exciting cricketing extravaganza. With more additions in the overseas players, the season will see the likes of AB de Villiers, Brendon McCullum and Shane Watson pitted against each other. While the overseas players are sure to be taking quite some limelight, the West Indies players aren’t far behind either. Whatever the reason be, there would be eyes glued on some of the West Indies players, who are expected to put on some heavy showing this season. The big names of Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul will surely have high expectations, but there are a few who could surprise you. Here is a list of such 5 West Indies players to watch out for in CPL 2016: 1. Darren Sammy couldn’t bag a deal in the IPL either and had to settle for commentary role. Amidst such circumstances, the all-rounder will have his eyes set on a good comeback and perform in whatever way possible. Sammy has been a great force when it comes to T20 cricket. He has played 205 T20s in his career so far and has a strike rate of over 35 with the bat to go with a tally of 180 wickets to his name with an economy of 7.75. He was spot on with his lengths and bowled highly economical spells throughout, erring very rarely. The kind of form he is in, he is surely a player to watch out for. Despite batting in the lower order, Holder has the ability to score big runs and can strike the long ball right from the word go. However, he hasn’t been given too many opportunities in the national team in the shortest format and has only 4 T20Is to his name. In a bid to make it to the national team, the CPL 2016 could well serve as the ideal ground for his purpose. Expect Holder to perform well this season! 3. Having played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Russell was leading the charts of leading wicket-taker for a long while this season. With 15 wickets to his name at a strike rate of mere 14.6, Russell had the best figures of 4/20 in the tournament. His batting came good as well as he amassed runs at crunch situations to bail his side out of trouble. He scored 188 runs in 12 matches with a highly impressive strike rate of 164.91 in the tournament. Coming after an injury, Russell will have his fitness tested on the big occasion in the CPL 2016. Simmons couldn’t participate in the IPL thereafter following an injury and had to fly back to the Caribbean after playing just one IPL game. However, he will be itching to take the field and make a strong comeback when he plays for St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots this season. He played for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL 2015 and was the 4th leading run scorer last season with 317 runs to his name in 9 matches. 5. He has been a prolific T20 player in the limited opportunities that he has got in his career so far. Kevon Cooper was the leading wicket taker in the Bangladesh Premier League earlier this year and had a five-wicket haul (5/15) to his name too. Having played 129 T20s, he has scalped 151 wickets at an economy of just 6.91. He played for the Lahore Qalandars in the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and was a good value addition to his team in the tournament.
