5 World-class bowlers who are dropped from ODI sides

Bowling in different formats of cricket is an art. While some bowlers thrive in the T20 format, they find it supremely difficult to perform in the longest format of cricket. Jasprit Bumrah, Ashish Nehra, and a few others are prime examples of the aforementioned statement. However, recent times have seen selectors picking teams separately for Tests and ODIs. While they usually get it right, some of the bowlers in the Test level are unplayable. However, when it comes to performing in limited-overs, these bowlers find it supremely hard. That said, here is a list of 5 world-class bowlers who are not playing ODI cricket for their country at the moment. 1. Dale Steyn: Dale Steyn. Playing a Tri-Series in the cluster of Islands, they, unfortunately, had to board a plane back home. In their squad, there is a small yet significant void left by pacer Dale Steyn. At one point of his career, Steyn was arguably the best bowler in the world. However, disaster struck in 2015 when he sustained a groin strain in 2015. It was at this point that Steyn’s international career looked bleak. He made it to the squad for the World T20 in India only to be left out of the squad for two of the four matches. At the moment, it seems as though the ageing Steyn may well find himself warming the benches in the matches to come. (Photo Source: Getty Images) One of England’s best bowlers to have ever donned the three lions, James Anderson is a gem of a bowler. However, he is a gem of a bowler to those who watch Test cricket. On his day, anyone will know as well as I do that James Anderson is simply unplayable. While he has 454 wickets in Test cricket, Anderson’s 269 wickets in ODIs, while impressively isn’t close to what he is capable of. Stuart Broad: England’s Stuart Broad. (Photo by SAEED KHAN/AFP/Getty Images) Stuart Broad has joined his partner-in-crime James Anderson after having been dropped from the ODI squad. Although many have lauded the change in his temperament, Broad’s drop from the side has seen many question his return to the England ODI squad. Moreover, with the likes of David Willey, Reece Topley, Chris Jordan, and a few others, it is highly unlikely that Broad will make his way back into the side. Although he has set his sights on the 2019 World Cup, his selection hangs in the balance. However, should the 30-year old remain fit, he will be a massive part of the England Test outfit for at least another 4 years. 4. Ravi Rampaul: Ravi Rampaul. (© ICC via Getty Images) Ravi Rampaul’s tryst with international cricket may have started a bit later than he would have expected. However, with a few bowlers in the form of Jerome Taylor and Carlos Brathwaite making it big on the international stage, the return for Rampaul looks highly unlikely. Of course, his swing bowling skills and smart variations will be important at the Test level, his ODI career seems to be almost over. A knee injury and a few niggles have also compounded his issues. As far as the competition for places in the team goes, the writing is well and truly on the wall. 5. Vernon Philander: South Africa’s Vernon Philander. (Photo Source: Getty Images) At the moment, the South African bowling attack is dominated by Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel, and Kyle Abbott. This sees Vernon Philander nail down only a Test match spot. While the 32-year old has been thrashed around the park in ODIs and T20Is, he is simply unplayable in Test matches. Moreover, he is one of the top-ranked bowlers in Test cricket, something that makes him a special asset in the longest format.
