6 Batsmen who have scored a double hundred and a duck in the same Test match: In sports, the phrase “All or Nothing” is heard way too often. There have been a lot of players who have been living examples of this phrase. There have been instances when there was a stark difference between a player’s performance in the 1st and the 2nd innings. For example, In the India’s tour of Australia in 2007/08, Sachin Tendulkar scored 493 in 4 Tests, only 53 of these runs came in the 2nd innings of the game. Proving that while Sachin gave his all in the 1st innings, there was nothing to show in the 2nd innings. We shall look the list of players who either went big and scored a double century or got out for a nothing, i.e. a duck! 1. He lost a chunk of his career to the 2nd World War. That though wasn’t before his brilliant innings in December 1935 against Australia. His side was bowled out for a mere 157 in the 1st innings and Nourse had a duck to his name. Trailing by 93 runs in the 2nd innings, Nourse toiled hard to get his side in the game. He scored 231 runs and with that, he got his side out of danger. Due to his heroics, the game ended in a draw. This was also the first such instance where a player scored a double century and a duck in the same game. 2. Imtiaz Ahmed (Pakistan): 209 & 0, v New Zealand, 1955: 5th May 1954: Imtiaz Ahmed (1928 – ) played for Pakistan (1952 – 1962) cricket team. (Photo by L. In 1955, Imtiaz, batting at number 8, revived his side from a spot of bother at 111/6 trailing New Zealand’s 348. He powered Pakistan to 561 and was promoted to the number 3 position in the 2nd innings chasing a paltry 116 for victory. He couldn’t replicate his form of the 1st innings and was dismissed for a duck. Pakistan though, went on to win the game by 4 wickets. 3. Seymour Nurse (West Indies): 201 & 0, v Australia, 1965: Seymour Nurse. (Photo Source) At the back of double centuries from the Bill Lawry and Bob Simpson, Australia posted a mammoth 650. West Indies needed to come back with a solid response. Seymour Nurse led the West Indian fight back. He along with Rohan Kanhai got WI close to the Australian total. In the 2nd innings, Simpson declared the innings with a lead of 252. When Nurse walked in, he had an opportunity to take his team to a famous victory as only 37 more runs were required for West Indies to win it. Alas! He was trapped in front of his stumps for a duck and the West Indies had to settle for a draw. 4. Sir Viv Richards (West Indies): 208 & 0, v Australia, 1984: Sir Viv Richards. Australia folded for 296 and it was Richards’ responsibility again to pile the runs to set the Australians an improbable target. That plan though, didn’t work as in the 2nd innings he was scalped by the great Craig McDermott and walked away with a second ball duck. West Indies missed out on an opportunity to push for a victory and the match ended in a draw. 5. He scored a double century against a hapless Indian pace attack taking Australia to 556 in the 1st innings. Indian reply led by Rahul Dravid fell short of the Australian total by only 33 runs. On the 4th morning of the game, an inspired Ajit Agarkar ran through the Australian batting order, Ponting was one of his scalps, for a duck. A mini collapse made way for a famous Indian victory on Australian soil after almost 26 years. 6. Shoaib Malik (Pakistan): 245 & 0, v Englad, 2015: Shoaib Malik. His comeback innings now is probably one of the best comebacks in recent years. Scoring a solid 245, Shoaib justified his selection with some class. In the second innings though, he got flummoxed by a James Anderson bouncer got himself out for a duck.
