A batsman’s dismissal for a score of zero in cricket is famously known as a ‘duck’. The term is a shortening of the term ‘duck’s egg’ which was used long before Test cricket began. When referring to the Prince of Wales’ (the future Edward VII) score of nought on 17th July 1866, a contemporary newspaper wrote that the Prince “retired to the royal pavilion on a duck’s egg”. The name is believed to come from the shape of the number 0 being similar to that of a duck’s egg. Here is a look the 6 instances in T20I cricket when both openers were dismissed for a duck. 1. Morris Ouma, David Obuya v New Zealand: Kenya’s David Obuya . Batting first Kenya was dismissed for a paltry 73 and in reply, the Kiwis gunned down the target in 7.4 over for the loss of one wicket. 2. Chris Foggo, David Hemp v Ireland: David Hemp of Bermuda. The home team batted first and scored 43/7 in the allotted 9 overs. In reply, Bermuda could manage only 41/8 after their openers failed to trouble the scorers. 3. William Porterfield, Gary Wilson v Kenya: (Photo Source: Getty Images) In another match in the same tournament, it was the home team openers who failed to open their accounts against Kenya at Belfast. Ireland’s captain William Porterfield faced 7 balls while his partner Gary Wilson faced 9 balls in the team’s run-chase of 68 runs. Ireland though eventually won the match by 4 wickets. 4. Imrul Kayes, Mohammad Ashraful v Australia: (Photo Source: Getty Images) On 5th May 2010, Australia posted 141/7 against Bangladesh at the Kensington Oval in Barbados in the ICC World Twenty20. In reply, the Asian team was bundled for 114 in 18.4 after a top-order collapse that included ducks of their openers Imrul Kayes and Mohammad Ashraful. 5. Richard Berrington, Calum MacLeod v Netherlands: (Photo Source: Getty Images) The ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier match on 28th November 2013 was contested between Scotland and Netherlands in Abu Dhabi. Batting first Scotland lost their openers very early however recovered to post 147/6. Netherlands gave a strong reply and won the match by 8 wickets overhauling the target in 17.5 overs. 6. Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal v West Indies: (Photo Source: Getty Images) In the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 West Indies proved too strong for Pakistan. Batting first the Caribbean islanders scored 166/6 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. In reply, the Pakistani openers Ahmed Shehzad and wicketkeeper, batsman Kamran Akmal failed to open their accounts and the innings eventually folded for 82 in 17.5 overs.
