7 Batsmen who got out obstructing the field: In cricket there are many modes of dismissals but there are some distinctive types of dismissals as well which creates a lot of controversies and ignites discussions from all the quarters. The ‘Law 37’ of Laws of Cricket says that “Either batsman is out Obstructing the field if he wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action. In particular, but not solely, it shall be regarded as obstruction and either batsman will be out Obstructing the field if while the ball is in play and after the striker has completed the act of playing the ball”. In the history of cricket, only few batsmen have got out in this weird way. Today we list 7 Batsmen who got out obstructing the field: 1. Sir Len Hutton (England): (source) One of the greatest English batsmen ever, Len Hutton was the first cricketer in the history of the game to be dismissed obstructing the field. The incident had occurred on South Africa’s tour of England in 1951. It was in the 5th Test match when Hutton top edged the ball and in a bid to prevent the ball from hitting the stumps Len made a deliberate attempt to hit the ball away which distracted the wicket-keeper from taking the catch. And soon he became the first and only cricketer in Test cricket to be given out for obstructing the field. 2. Rameez Raja (Pakistan): (source) Rameez Raja is hailed as one of the finest ODI players from Pakistan. In 1987, he had become the first ever ODI cricketer to be given out for obstructing the field. The stylish Pakistani right-handed batsman was batting on 98 and in the last ball of the match required 2 runs to complete his ton. Rameez did complete one run but while taking the second run tried to prevent the fielder’s throw from hitting the stumps and was hence adjudged out on 99. It is notable that Pakistan required 23 runs off the last ball to win the match. Rameez ended the match with the sorrow of missing out on an ODI ton; in the end his team lost the match as well. 3. Mohinder Amarnath (India): Mohinder Amarnath was the King of getting out in unusual ways. Amarnath had got out in freakish ways not once but twice, once for handling the ball and then for obstructing the field in ODI cricket. In 1989 against Sri Lanka at Ahemdabad, he had kicked the ball away from the bowler in order to prevent himself from getting run-out. He is the only Indian till date to get out for obstructing the field. 4. Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pakistan): Inzamam-ul-Haq has a history of coming up with different kinds of comical things which always left the fans in loud laughter. From falling down on to the stumps to getting down in the middle of the pitch, he has done it all. In a ODI match against arch-rivals India in 2006 at Peshawar, the bulky batsman had stepped out of his crease after playing a defensive stroke to mid-off, Suresh Raina who was the fielder positioned there aimed at the stumps as he was out of his crease but Inzy stopped the ball with his bat and as a result Indian’s appealed against him. Later, he was ruled out for obstructing the field by the on-field umpire Simon Taufel. 5. Mohammade Hafeez (Pakistan): In a ODI match against South Africa in 2013, Hafeez who was already having a horrid tour was given out for obstructing the field much to his misery. Imran Farhat had nudged the ball on the leg-side, the duo completed the first run easily but while running for the second run, Hafeez came in the line of throw and his body prevented AB de Villier’s throw from hitting the stumps. The South African’s appealed against him and then he was found guilty under the 37th law of cricket. 6. Anwar Ali (Pakistan): Anwar Ali is the fourth Pakistani player to appear in this list. In the 2nd ODI match against South Africa in 2013, the lanky Pakistani all-rounder tried to steal a quick bye when Umar Akmal got beaten off Steyn’s bowling and the ball went to the wicket-keeper but Akmal refused to take the run and in a bid to get back to his crease at non-striker’s end, Ali ran in the middle of the pitch because of which the ball hit him on the body and not the stumps. Ben Stokes (England): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34jl4iUYZZo The English all-rounder Ben Stokes became the latest entrant in the list of batsmen getting out by means of obstructing the field when he tried to safeguard himself from Mitchell Starc’s throw at the stumps in follow-through and put his glove against the ball to escape from the throw. The incident occurred in the 2nd ODI match between England and Australia at Lord’s. Currently both the teams are playing a 5-match ODI series. The dismissal sparked off huge controversy in the media and many believed that the Australian’s should have withdrawn the appeal for the sake of spirit of the game.
