7 Cricketers who can hit 100 sixes in Test Cricket

Test cricket is like an examination. One needs to be sharp in decision making, needs to be patient and most importantly, be ready for a mental and physical battle with the ball. The longest and toughest format of the game saw some serious hard-hitters in the business but there’s only three cricketers in the history of the game to hit 100 or more than 100 sixes in Test cricket. The Australian Adam Gilchrist was the first cricketer ever to do so. The 50-year-old played 96 Test matches for the Kangaroos and hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. Brendon McCullum became the second cricketer to achieve this feat. In his illustrious career, the former Kiwi captain has 107 sixes to his name in Test cricket. The current Test coach of the England team took 101 matches to register the record of most sixes hit by an individual in the history of Test cricket. If anyone who’s close enough to shatter McCullum’s record is England team captain, Ben Stokes. The 31-year-old recently made history and became the only active International cricketer to hit 100 sixes in the longest format of the game. The English International took just 84 matches to cement his place in the record books. Now, the question arises, can anyone else draw inspiration from Ben Stokes and hit 100 sixes in Test cricket? Well, it’s tough but not impossible. Thus, here are 7 cricketers who can join Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum and Adam Gilchrist in the elite club of 100 sixes in Test cricket. 7 Cricketers who can hit 100 sixes in Test cricket 1. Rohit Sharma Rohit Sharma. (Photo Source: Twitter) Often considered as a six hitting machine, Rohit Sharma hit 64 sixes so far in Test cricket. The Indian captain took just 45 matches to hit the number and with just 36 more sixes, Rohit can be a part of the elite list. The problem, however, is his age. He currently is 35 years old and may decide not to continue with this format in due course. He is a beast in white-ball cricket and thus he may call his time on Test cricket to focus more on that. Another big problem is his injury concerns. The hitman missed a lot of chances to feature in the Test squad because of multiple injuries. He never could play as many matches as he should have. However, if he continues to don the Indian white, the Hitman can complete 100 sixes in the toughest format of the game. 2. David Warner David Warner of Australia. David Warner played 96 matches for Australia so far and the Southpaw can be a part of the list if continue to play the way he does in Test cricket. However, like Rohit, age is not on his side. There’s no clarity regarding the number of years he will continue in Test cricket as it can be a challenge for him going forward. However, the 35-year-old is enjoying the format of the game and scoring a lot of runs to keep up. The opener has 7817 runs in Test cricket with his highest score of 335 runs against Pakistan. If he manages to continue, Warner and Rohit might have a competition of who finishes with most sixes in Test cricket and most importantly, whether any of them can hit the magic number of 100! 3. Angelo Mathews Angelo Mathews century. (Photo Source: Getty Images) With 75 sixes to his name, Angelo Mathews is the 3rd in the list of most sixes by an active International cricketer. The Sri Lankan legend has played 100 Tests so far for his country and like Rohit and Warner, this 35-year-old doesn’t have time on his side. Angelo Mathews however is a very dependable batsman. He can contribute with the ball as well and when it comes to hitting sixes, no Sri Lankan has hit more sixes than him in Test cricket. The question however remains, can he achieve this milestone before he retires? Well, he can. Hitting 25 more sixes in Test cricket is very much possible for a class batter like Mathews. In terms of his fitness, he can continue with the game for two more years at least and thus, will have the time to achieve the feat. Well, Tim Southee proved everyone wrong as the Kiwi International currently has 76 sixes to his name in Test Cricket. The premium pacer played 88 Tests so far for New Zealand and is a regular starter for the team. The 33-year-old can actually become the only bowler in history to feature in this elite list. The Kiwi management gave him the freedom to play his natural cricket and that over the years, it helped him a lot to hit so many sixes. Interestingly, Southee has more sixes to his name than Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, AB De Villiers, Clive Lloyed, Sourav Ganguly and many other legends of this game. The only active bowler who comes close to Tim Southee is Mitchell Starc, who has 44 sixes to his name in this format. 5. Rishabh Pant Rishabh Pant. Given his form and dominance in Test cricket, it is highly expected that the wicket-keeper batter will reach the milestone sooner than later. Being just 24-years-old, Pant has a lot of time in his hand to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. He has shown his six hitting abilities against Australia and England in the past and he can of course accelerate against weaker teams. The team management has given him complete freedom to play the way he wants and he has just wrecked bowlers on multiple occasions so far. With the highest score of 159 runs in Test cricket, Pant has 2123 runs in this format. Hitting sixes is his biggest strength and it won’t be surprising if he becomes the quickest one to reach the target. 6. Jonny Bairstow Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow has played 88 Test matches for England so far and can be the second cricketer from England to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket. Bairstow currently is 32-years-old and thus doesn’t have a lot of time in his hand to hit 54 more sixes. However, after the introduction of ‘Bazball’ in England cricket, he now has a lot of freedom to express himself. Given his record in white-ball cricket, Bairstow can hit a lot of sixes and if he can execute that in Test cricket, Bairstow can achieve the goal. The wicket-keeper batter is a very important member of the England squad at the moment. He along with Ben Stokes gives the much needed stability in the team, something that was missing in the 2021-22 season. 7. Ravindra Jadeja Ravindra Jadeja. The left-hander played 60 Tests for India as of now and features regularly in the Indian Test team. The 33-year-old has time to go the distance. Being a spinner, Jadeja can easily play for at least five more years. In the meantime, if he manages to hit 45 more sixes, he can be a part of the elite list. Is it tough? Of course it is. He is a lower middle order batter who doesn’t get a lot of batting. That’s the only concern at the moment. The southpaw has 2523 runs in Test cricket so far, with his highest score of 175 runs. The all-rounder also has 242 Test wickets to his name.
