The England opener Trescothick played 76 Test matches and 123 ODIs for his team. Suffering from clinical depression Trescothick was criticized for his uncertainty. Things started to change for his career that started in 2000 when in 2006 during England’s tour of India he returned home abruptly. He made a comeback in Test scored a century and the next six matches against Sri Lanka saw only one half-century. Trescothick came back to form after two ODI centuries versus Ireland and Sri Lanka respectively. Though in September he backed out from the remaining ODIs in Pakistan and asked the Board not to consider his name for the ICC Champions Trophy because of his illness.

In July 2007, he was included in the T20 World Championship in South Africa but he withdrew his name before the final confirmation date. Trescothick went on to have two-years without a contract from England. There were speculations about his return in the International arena which was put to rest after he announced his retirement. The fallen hero of the Internationals continues to play county cricket.
