Losing his place to Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer was the Test opener for the Indian side. Jaffer debuted in Test cricket in 2000 against West Indies, soon losing his place. Though, his county performance reminded the selectors of his worth after 3 years in Team A he was recalled in the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka in 2005-06. He made a maiden century against England in Nagpur in 2006 following it up with a double against West Indies in the same year. He then lost his place to the prominent name of the Indian squad, Gautam Gambhir.

Meanwhile, he kept on playing county cricket, scoring a triple century and has been a run-machine for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Though, he never succeeded in finding his way back to the Indian international squad.
