The automatic qualifiers for the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup 2022 have been confirmed after West Indies lost to Australia by eight wickets on Saturday, November 6, at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Eight teams- India, Australia, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan and Bangladesh- have made the cut for the Super 12 of the mega event next year.

The winner and runners-up of the T20 World Cup along with the next six highest-ranked T20I teams in the ICC rankings qualified directly for the Super 12 of next year’s tournament. The deadline for determining the same was set to be on Monday, November 15. West Indies are currently sitting at No.10 in the rankings after losing to Aaron Finch’s Aussies and their position won’t change by the deadline.

Sri Lanka to again play T20 World Cup qualifiers

Bangladesh, led by Mahmudullah, had to play the Qualifiers this season, but they will directly play the Super 12 next season after finishing at No.8 in the rankings. The Tigers lost five of their matches in the second round this year. Before Saturday, the top six teams – England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia – made sure of cementing their spots, ICC’s official website reported.

Sri Lanka played the qualifiers this year and they will again be going through the same round next time. The Dasun Shanaka-led team won all three games in the Qualifiers, but lost three out of five matches in the Super 12. The Islanders ended at No.9 in the rankings. Mohammad Nabi’s Afghanistan are currently placed seventh in the rankings and cannot go beyond eighth.

As of now, the Afghans will play at least one game in the ongoing World Cup. If they beat New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, they could even qualify for the knockouts of the tournament. Thus far, Shanaka’s Sri Lanka, Kieron Pollard’s West Indies, Gerhard Erasmus’ Namibia and Kyle Coetzer’s Scotland have been decided as the teams in the first round of the T20 World Cup 2022.

As far as the ongoing edition is concerned, Pakistan, Australia and England have qualified for the semi-final. One team among India, Afghanistan and New Zealand will qualify for the semis. The semi-finalists will be decided after the end of the Super 12 on Monday, November 8.
