8 Times in Tests when both openers got run-out in the same innings: There are many ways in which a batsman gets dismissed but there are some in which he considers himself ill-fated or you can say some form of dismissals irritates the batters more in comparison to others. After getting out, disappointment always remains with the batsman but run-out is a mode of dismissal when you can get out even if your partner makes a mistake which agitates the players even more. Today, we present to you a very unique article. Till now we have heard or seen an opener getting run-out but there have been some rare occasions in 138 year old history of Test cricket when both the openers have got run-out in the same innings. So, let’s have a look at 8 Times in Tests when both openers got run-out in the same innings: 1. Australia v England at Adelaide (1902): Archie MacLaren. (Source) The first such instance when both the openers got run-out in the same innings came in the 3rd Ashes Test match between Australia and England in 1902 at Adelaide. And it was the opening pair of the English team which got out in such a dismal fashion. The openers were Archie MacLaren and Tom Hayward. They had put up 149 runs for the 1st wicket before MacLaren got run-out on 67 and after that his partner Hayward who played a brilliant knock of 90 runs also got run-out. 2. England v India at the Oval (1946): Vijay Merchant. (Source) It took further 44 years before such an incident took place in Test cricket. England was again involved in the match but not certainly in the run-outs tragedy. It was Indian openers namely Vijay Merchant and Syed Mushtaq Ali who got run-out in the 1st innings of the 3rd Test match against England at the Oval in 1946. The Indian openers had got the side off to a decent start and they had put on 94 runs for the 1st wicket before a miscommunication between Ali and Merchant brought about Ali’s downfall. Later, Merchant also got run-out. 3. Australia v India at Melbourne (1948): Sid Barrner. (Source) In the 1st innings of the 5th Test match between Australia and India at Melbourne, the Australian openers fell prey to run-outs in the same innings. Sid Barnes and Bill Brown were the Aussie openers. Sid Barnes was looking in majestic touch and had scored 33 runs out of 48 runs added for the 1st wicket before getting run-out. Later, Bill Brown also got run-out but he was even more unlucky as he got out on 99 runs and fell just 1 run short of a well deserved century. 4. India v West Indies at Mumbai (1948): Vinoo Mankad. (Photo Source: PA Photos) The Indian openers Vinoo Mankad and KC Ibrahim got run-out in the 1st innings of the 2nd Test match between India and West Indies at Mumbai. The duo had just added 27 runs on the board before Ibrahim got run-out. India got into steep trouble when Mankad who was looking solid also got run-out in the innings and became the 3rd Indian wicket to fall at only 32 runs. 5. India v West Indies at Kolkata (1966): Conrad Hunte. (source) After a gap of 18 years, finally a Test match witnessed two openers getting run-out in the same innings when India took on West Indies in the Kolkata Test in 1966. It was West Indies openers, Conrad Hunte and Robin Bynoe who got run-out on 43 and 19 runs respectively in the 1st innings of West Indies batting. Ultimately, it was West Indies who won the match comprehensively by an innings and 45 runs. 6. West Indies v Australia at St John’s (1991): Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge. (Photo Source: PA Photos) It was again the West Indies openers who achieved the rather unwanted feat of getting run-out in the same innings. The openers were none other than the renowned pair of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes. They were players of immense value to their team. But in 1991 St. John’s Test against Australia, Greenidge and Haynes had put up a good fight when West Indies was chasing a mammoth target of 455 runs before a bad call led to the downfall of Haynes. Later, Greendige also got run-out. Australia won the match by 157 runs. 7. South Africa v Australia at Cape Town 1994: Gary Kirsten. (source) In the 2nd Test match of the 3-match Test series against Australia, the South African openers Andrew Hudson and Gary Kirsten got run-out in the 1st innings of the Test. First it was the South African southpaw Kirsten who got run-out on 29 runs which meant the solid opening partnership of 71 runs got broken and then after quite some time it was Hudson who was run-out after making a well compiled century. 8. New Zealand v Bangladesh at Hamilton (2010): BJ Walting. (Source) In this Test something even more interesting happened. Until now we have seen or heard openers getting run-out in the same innings but on this rare occasion the first three batters of the team got run-out in the same innings. This instance took place in Hamilton Test in New Zealand v Bangladesh Test when the Kiwi openers Tim McIntosh and BJ Watling got run-out followed by Peter Ingram who also got dismissed in the same fashion.
