Kusal Mendis has recently emerged as one of the players who holds the capacity to fill the huge void left after the departure of big names like Kumar Sangakarra and Mahela Jayawardene. Mendis come from the rich school cricket environment which has given the country many prominent cricketers in the past. The Right batsmen has been impressive right since his school day and has grown from level to level to become of the most promising young guns currently in the national team.
1.Born on:
Balapuwaduge Kusal Gimhan Mendis was born on February 2, 1995, in the large suburb of Moratuwa in the capital city of Colombo.
2. Belongs to a poor family:
Mendis’ father is a carpenter. the young boy has always credited his success to his father whom he considers his biggest inspiration and support.
3.Another promising name from school cricket:
Mendis won the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award in 2013, for his outstanding performances playing for his school, the Prince of Wales College team.
4.Leads Under-19 team:
He led the Sri Lanka’s U – 19 squad for the 2014 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
5.First Class debut:
Mendis began his first-class career for Bloomfield Cricket Club in the Premier League Tournament of 2015.
6.Test debut:
He made his Test debut in 2nd Test of West Indies tour of Sri Lanka 2015, scoring 13 runs in the first innings and 39 runs in the second innings
7.ODI debut:
He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Ireland on 16 June 2016, scoring his maiden ODI fifty.
8.The career defining century:
On 28 July 2016, Mendis scored his maiden Test century reach during the first Test against Australia at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium. In a match where none of the batsmen from the wither side could register a fifty, Mendis fought brilliantly and rescue his team from a losing position. He became the youngest Sri Lankan to score a century against Australia and also the highest score against Australia on home soil.

“We have a young guy in Kusal Mendis. I think he’s got a lot to offer Sri Lanka as he grows, I think he’s still only 21. He’s got a great head position, gets into the ball really well and he’s a lot of good things to build upon. I think he’ll be very special as the years go by,” said Kumar Sangakkara.
