Sri Lanka is currently locking horns with the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies in a series of white-ball internationals. The caravan of the series has finally reached its final leg with both sides set to square-off in the final T20I of the two-match series.
The series has largely been played in good spirits barring an ugly incident during one of the games where a drunken Sri Lankan fan can be seen verbally harassing a couple because they had wrapped the national flag around their body. The video of the incident has been going viral on social media and several Sri Lankan fans have condemned the unruly behavior of one of their own.
One such fan, who has been deeply ‘ashamed’ with what happened has now taken to Reddit to post a heartfelt apology for the couple.
The fan wrote, “During one of the recent matches between SL and WI, a tourist couple who was supporting SL were harassed by a drunkard. Apparently, the drunkard was mad because the lady had kept the SL flag wrapped around her body. This is absolute nonsense as we’ve often see supporters of other nations do the same thing. Investigations by authorities are currently underway. The video has gone viral on Facebook and Twitter and SL fans have collectively condemned this shameful behavior and demanded compensation for the foreign couple. If you are seeing this post please accept our sincerest apologies as we do not tolerate this behavior as a nation”
To the couple who were harassed by a drunkard during the recent SLvWI match. If you are seeing this post, please accept my sincerest apologies for this moron’s behavior in behalf of all the Lankans. from Cricket
Coming back to what happened in the series thus far, the hosts, on the back of imperious hundreds from Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis and the wrist-spin pair of Lakshan Sandakan and Wanindu Hasaranga, scripted their first-ever whitewash in fifty-over cricket since 2015.
But the T20 World champions staged a comeback by winning the first of the Twenty20 Internationals after their omnipresent firepower propelled them to 4-196 in 20 overs. Defending 197, West Indies needed early wickets. And, Oshane Thomas provided them with not one but three scalps in his very first over to peg back the Lankans.
Thomas finished with a five-wicket haul to help the Windies clinch the first T20I by 25 runs and the tourists and will now be looking to seal the rubber in Pallekele on Friday (March 06).
