If there has been a young cricketer who has dictated terms in the Indian domestic circuit in the recent times, then it has been Prithvi Shaw. His recent heroics have brought him in the limelight. However, experts like Aakash Chopra believe Shaw must not be hurried in to the Indian cricket team right away. As per the recent quotes in Inuth, Chopra mentioned that there is no hurry to bring him in the team.
Aakash Chopra feels Shaw must play domestic cricket and fine tune his game even more. Veteran coach Pravin Amre is also of the same opinion. Even he cited that Shaw has the capability of doing well at the highest level. However, there is no rush as such to bring him to the biggest stage just yet. He hopes Shaw continues to enjoy his cricket.
“What’s the rush? Why can’t he wait for some more time? If he’s good, then he’ll just get better with time. If a kid is put in the Indian team at a young age, then there is a possibility of losing the player,” quoted Aakash Chopra.
“If given an opportunity, I think Shaw has the confidence and potential to do well at the international level, but to be honest, at the top level, the competition is too high. Shaw should enjoy wherever he is playing and scoring in matches. It will only help him become a better player,” mentioned Pravin Amre.
If not now, then when?
Meanwhile, former domestic cricketer Shishir Hattangadi has a divided opinion on the same. He feels that there is absolutely no reason why Shaw must not be picked in the national side. He asked if Shaw is fulfilling the yardsticks to be qualified for national selection, then why not? Makarand Waigankar also opined the same and said that if Sachin Tendulkar was tried at the age of 16, then what wrong has Shaw done till now?
“What are the yardsticks for someone to be called ready? He is comfortable at a certain level, he is dominating, and if these are the parameters, then he’s ready. What is there to wait? If he is scoring runs and dominating at a certain level. I will be surprised if his name is not discussed in the next India Test squad selection meeting,” Shishir Hattangadi mentioned.
“Why not? If Sachin Tendulkar can at 16, then why not Shaw? He has scored four hundred, all against quality attack. If not now, then when? While Tendulkar batted at Number five when he made his debut, Shaw, as an opener, has been facing the new ball, which is more difficult,” quoted Makarand Waigankar.
