Aakash Chopra puts forth a drill MS Dhoni prefers to avoid during practice
"He's bowling in the nets, batting, bowling spin, bowling fast."
MS Dhoni is known as a disciplined individual and the attribute is one of the reasons why the 37-year-old is still up and running, and is plying his trade expertly at the international stage. He recently scored three half-centuries in a row and became the Player of the Tournament in the ODI series against Australia. In all three games, the veteran from Jharkhand batted during India’s run-chase.
His reflexes haven’t died down by any stretch of the imagination as he has effected quite a few stumpings even at this age. In the meantime, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra put forth a drill that Dhoni prefers to avoid during the training sessions. The experienced commentator opined on the same during his commentary stint in the third and final T20I at the Seddon Park in Hamilton.
And still, he’s that good
“We’ve spoken about the number of innings he’s had as a keeper, but you will never see him keep. It’s only in the matches he will don the gloves. In the practice sessions before the game, the warm-up sessions the day before or on the eve of the game, you will never see him don the gloves at all.
He’s bowling in the nets, batting, bowling spin, bowling fast – he doesn’t keep. And still, he’s that good,” Chopra was quoted as saying.
Dhoni showed his stupendous glovework in the last game as he stumped Tim Seifert off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling when the batsman was looking ominous having scored 43 runs from 25 balls with three boundaries and as many hits into the stands.
Chopra also went on to mention that Dhoni remains in the thick of things as far as leadership is concerned, despite him being not the designated captain. He gave up captaincy from all three formats back in January 2017 during India’s home series against England when Virat Kohli took over.
“The other thing we are seeing now, even though he’s not the designated captain, is leadership. That’s been a massive part of his career,” he added.
