It would sound absolutely ridiculous when someone says that removing just two players from a side will change the fortunes of the side completely. It is not easy to believe that those two players can just determine the overall fortunes of a team. But, that is exactly what has happened with the Australian cricket team.
The team has had a disastrous time ever since the duo of Steve Smith and David Warner were handed over a one-year ban by Cricket Australia. In fact, it seems as if the team is undergoing a mini-transition of sorts. Two formats, eleven games, three wins. This is the summary of the team’s performance since the suspension of the duo. Further, the team led by Aaron Finch also lost to Pakistan in the T20I tri-series final in Zimbabwe to come back home without a single trophy.
Australia reworking their strategies
However, Australia’s head coach Justin Langer feels that the team has gained experience from these games. Also, he hinted at what could be a huge change in the setup. Right from the leadership, to the support staff, Langer hinted at quite a few changes to get the team back on track.
“After this tour, we’ll have a really, really close look at everything we’re doing at the moment including our leadership, which is such an incredibly high priority in Australian cricket,” Langer said. “Finchy has definitely put his best foot forward in this series. So we’ll look at that. We’ll look at all our staff. We’ll look at everything to make sure we keep flying forward, as is the expectation of the Australian cricket team.”
Tim Paine has had a terrible time leading the side thus far. Hence, it is quite obvious that there will be a change in the leadership. Finch is one of the better options available for the job at the moment and his performances in the recently concluded tri-series will add to his credentials.
“He’s been brilliant,” Langer said. “Finchy and I spoke privately yesterday and I told him he’s done a great job at the top of the order. To have someone that dynamic is a great example to all our players. As we saw from Pakistan today, you’ve got to play fearless cricket. D’Arcy [Short] started taking steps towards that today like we’ve seen from him in Big Bash cricket. That’s how he needs to play his cricket,” he added speaking about Finch and the impact he has created.
