AB de Villiers hails Naomi Osaka; takes a sly dig at Serena Williams
Much deserved, wrote AB de Villiers.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka scripted history by winning the Australian Open for the first time. Naomi overhaul Petra Kvitova 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 6-4 in a battle that lasted just under three hours. This is her second Grand Slam win in a row and former Proteas cricketer AB de Villiers was all praise for her.
Noami Osaka battled out the tough, humid conditions in Melbourne to register this memorable win. Osaka was all smiling at the trophy presentation after this win, unlike the last time when she won the US Open. Many hailed her performance and also trolled the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.
The veteran was taken down by Naomi Osaka in the US Open last year. However, instead of gracefully accepting the defeat, Serena created a fuss by lashing out at the umpire Carlos Ramos. This incident left the Japanese player in tears and hiding behind her visor as she collected the trophy. She was booed by the American crowd back then and it all did not end really well for her.
This time she’s been “allowed” to enjoy the moment
After the victory, AB de Villiers came up with a special tweet for Naomi Osaka. He hailed her for winning two majors in a row and added that it was much-deserved by her. Furthermore, the 34-year-old cricketer took a sly dig at Serena Williams. He wrote that Naomi Osaka was allowed to enjoy the moment this time.
“2 majors in a row! This time she’s been “allowed” to enjoy the moment. Much deserved #OsakaKvitova #AustralianOpen,” wrote AB de Villiers in his tweet.
“No one deserves to win your 1st major with the sound of booing around! Serena should have handled the situation better. Give the young girl her moment in the spotlight. All professional athletes have moments where we feel hard done by, u keep your head down & try to fight it out,” ABD tweeted back in time after the US Open.
