AB de Villiers to discuss his future with CSA in August

South Africa’s ODI skipper AB de Villiers will discuss his future availability with the South African team in the month of August and has hinted that the next coach would influence his decision on whether to stay or not with CSA.

The South African skipper has taken a long leave in the longest format of cricket, missing out the series against New Zealand and Australia due to his injury woes in the year 2016. The right-hander further missed the tour of Sri Lanka in the current year and had also confirmed that he would sit out against New Zealand later this year as well as the on-going series against England.

However, the maestro has not confirmed his participation for the Bangladesh series, that is set to begin in Septemeber and October. The 33-year-old has led the team in all of the ODI series’ since his injury and also led his side in the recently concluded T20 series against England.

His unavailability in Test cricket has raised a few concerns about whether the players showed be allowed to pick and choose which format they could participate. AB de Villiers will now sit with the CSA officials in the month of August to form some form of concrete clarity on his future.

“We will see what works for both parties (in terms of a date), and we are going to have a nice chat about my future,” de Villiers said after the third Twenty20 international against England in Cardiff.

“We are not going to pick and choose games, but we are going to make a final decision about happens for the next few years.” added the skipper.

Russel Domingo’s stint as Proteas coach

The current coach, Russel Domingo’s contract, would come to an end following the Test series against England later next month and has not yet confirmed whether he would extend his contract. The limited overs skipper wants Domingo to continue his stint as South Africa’s coach.

Speaking about his future, de Villiers said on Sunday: “There are quite a few things that are changing in South African cricket at the moment, quite a few things we need to wait for. I don’t even think it’s in my hands what is going to happen. I will wait until the final decision on the coach and things like that are made, then I can also have a chat to CSA, to see where I am going to fit in.”

The right-handed batsman has already told the media that he has set his sight on the 2019 World Cup, for which he might even sit out of the longest format of the game. Would AB de Villiers exit the test arena at a very young age? Only time would tell us his decision.
