'Ab underground hone ka samay aa gaya' - Twitter trolls Ravi Shastri on Sourav Ganguly's appointment as BCCI President
On the appointment of the Ganguly as the BCCI head, many Indian fans hilariously trolled Indian Head Coach Ravi Shastri.
There are captains. There are leaders, and then there is Sourav Chandidas Ganguly. Back in 2000, Indian cricket was in dire straits. Following the match-fixing scandal and the subsequent ouster of folk heroes like Mohammad Azharuddin, Indian cricket needed someone who could restore the lost integrity as well as the faith of the fans in this cricket-loving country.
Enter Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly was a born leader. He was not only a great talent spotter but also someone who would go to the hilt for a youngster if he felt that the guy was match-winner. Ganguly’s sole motive was a create a fearless Team India; a team that would not only be unbeatable at home but also competitive in obscure territories.
And so began India’s transformation. Under his leadership, Ganguly introduced talents like Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Ashish Nehra, Mohammad Kaif and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who not went on to became match-winners but also the torchbearers of Indian cricket in the 21st century.
Nineteen years later, and Indian fans are once again looking towards their crisis man, to clean up the mess that has plagued the richest cricket board in the world. Ever since the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal broke out, The Board of Control for Cricket in India has virtually been a dysfunctional unit. In recent years, the Board has found itself mired with several conflicts of interest controversy, amongst many other issues. With Sourav Ganguly becoming the head of the organization, fans are hugely optimistic that their crisis man will once again deliver.
So, on the appointment of the Ganguly as the BCCI head, many Indian fans hilariously trolled Indian Head Coach Ravi Shastri. For the uninitiated, Shastri and Ganguly have been at loggerheads ever since the latter claimed that he lost out on the coaching role due to the former Indian captain’s presence in the Cricket Advisory Committee back in 2016. Ganguly had reacted to Shastri’s claims back then, stating that the player-turned-commentator-turned-coach was living in a fool’s paradise.
