Abdul Qadir recently raises his concern regarding the retirement of the Pakistani stalwarts simultaneously as it would leave a massive void in the Pakistani batting line-up and leave them hapless. The duo plays their last Test match of their cricketing career at Dominica starting today. Proper arrangements have been made such that the two Pakistani stalwarts receive a befitting farewell.
Earlier it was announced that Shahid Afridi would join in to receive his farewell along with Misbah and Younis. Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq have played as many as 191 Tests collectively and have amassed almost 16000 runs in the longest format of the game. Younis has been a regular feature in the Test squad since he made his debut back in 2000.
Citing the status of Sri Lankan cricket after the departure of their iconic batsmen Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, Qadir fears about the impact it would have on Pakistan cricket.
“I was really sad when [Kumar] Sangakkara and [Mahela] Jayawardene left the Sri Lankan team together. Look at their team now, they are in such a disarray,” stated the Pakistani leg-spinner according to India Today. “Likewise, both of these batsmen leaving together could cause problems for Pakistan’s Test team. However, they have been great servants to the country,”
However, the former Pakistani leg-spinner believes that the team currently has adequate resources to fill in for the two senior most cricketers in the team. Qadir circled out the names of Umar Akmal and Fawad Alam as the possible replacement for these stalwarts.
“Azhar [Ali], Babar [Azam] and [Asad] Shafiq are capable enough of taking over the reins when both veterans leave. However, if you need to bring someone in then give Umar Akmal an extended run in Tests because he still has the ability if he works hard and focuses on his game. Another choice can be Fawad Alam but everyone knows where he is – nowhere in the picture,” he concluded.
