The sting operations by news channel Al Jazeera have created quite a bit of commotion in the cricket world. Sri Lankan cricket was earlier accused of altering the condition of the pitches at Galle in a couple of matches versus Australia and India. Thereafter, they released a video surrounding Hasan Raza’s, the former Pakistani cricketer, involvement in match-fixing issues.

Recently, the News Channel also released a documentary where they alleged England and Australia’s cricketers for corrupt activities. However, in the clip, the names of the Australian cricketers were muted and quite rightly, Cricket Australia (CA) has asked for the original footage in order to verify the credibility of the spot-fixing accusations.

“I refuse to believe”- Gilchrist

Meanwhile, Adam Gilchrist accepted that no country is immune to match-fixing and other undesired attempts to adulterate the sport. Nevertheless, he is furious by the claims of the news channel and asked them to expose the cricketers behind the matters provided there is any. The 46-year also wondered the reasons why the players would even think about involving in such matters.

“No body, no nation, no team is immune to [spot-fixing] and there’s every chance it’s still going on around the cricketing world. So Australia, or England, or whoever they’re accusing – there’s a chance it could be going on, but if you’re that certain, then name them,” Adam Gilchrist was quoted as saying by Back Page Live on Tuesday night.

“I refuse to believe – and I’d be disappointed if I was proved otherwise – but England and Australian cricketers are getting paid so much. Unless these bookies have got a hook in these guys and they’ve got something over them from some other part in their life that they don’t want exposed, I can’t imagine why they would want to go and do it,” the former Australian cricketer remarked.

The match concerned is Australia’s Test versus India at Ranchi back in March last year. The contest was a high-scoring one and eventually ended in a draw. Australia piled on 451 runs and India replied by scoring 603 runs courtesy of a double century by Cheteshwar Pujara. The visitors only managed 204 for the loss of six wickets in the second innings.
