Adam Gilchrist congratulates MS Dhoni on reaching 9000 ODI runs
While Adam Gilchrist was one of the first few wicketkeeper-batsmen to scale the summit of reaching the 9000-run mark in ODIs. However, with the Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni reaching the mark against New Zealand in Mohali, the former Australian custodian was perhaps one of the first few to congratulate the Indian skipper.
Adam Gilchrist, who boasts of 9610 ODI runs during his illustrious career was perhaps one of the most important players t have ever played the game for Australia. Earlier in the previous week, Gilchrist’s former skipper Steve Waugh had stated that Gilchrist was one of the very few players who changed the sport for the better after the turn of the millennium.
However, the man of the moment was the 35-year old Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The 35-year old promoted himself up the order for perhaps the first time since his scintillating knock of 91 in the 2011 edition of the World Cup final. Having promoted himself up the order, Dhoni rolled back the years with a few smashes out of the park in Mohali.
Of course, he chanced his arm, something that has seldom been seen from the Indian skipper since his retirement from Test cricket all those years ago in the fall of 2014. During his knock, Dhoni scored 9000 ODI runs becoming only the fifth Indian batsman and third wicketkeeper-batsman to reach the milestone.

He also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of most number of sixes in ODIs (195) by an Indian and also became also completed 150 stumpings in international cricket.
Adam Gilchrist wrote a fitting tribute with perhaps one of the most appropriate pictures paying homage to both Sangakkara and Dhoni. :”A day or so late, but huge congrats to #MSDhoni on reaching #9000 ODI runs. Cool, calm, collected at all times. Never more so than in the image above #CWCup2011 The bloke behind him went ok as well! #Sanga”.
