Adam Voges has been appointed the head coach of Western Australia and Perth Scorchers for the upcoming domestic season. He will replace Justin Langer who was designated at the helm of the national team earlier this month after Darren Lehmann resigned from the position.

Voges announced his international retirement in February last year and later went on to hang his boots in the Australian domestic cricket as well. However, he is excited to take over as the head coach of both the teams and realises that he has big shoes of Langer to fill in.

He competed with the current Warriors assistant Kade Harvey and the former Australian cricketer Simon Katich for the role. Even Michael Hussey was in the fray but his involvements with the various T20 teams and commentary commitments led the WACA chief Christina Mathews to rule him out.

I’m incredibly excited

Voges will be under pressure to replicate the similar success Langer achieved with the team during his stint from 2012. He won three Big Bash League (BBL) titles and a couple of domestic One-Day trophies while he was with the team.

“I’m incredibly excited, I’ve been walking around with a pretty big smile on my face for the last few days once I found out. No doubt there are some big shoes to fill, Justin’s done a terrific job with this group for the last six years and that’s the reason he’s the Australian coach now,” he was quoted as saying by ABC News.

He also cleared that the team will welcome back Cameron Bancroft after serving his nine-month suspension period imposed by Cricket Australia (CA) in the wake of the ball-tampering controversy.

“I’ve met with Cameron a couple of times now and he certainly has my full support, as he does the whole organisation’s support. We’ll map out a plan for him and he’s well-loved and respected within the playing group. He certainly has my backing and we’ll get him back and have him ready for when he’s available,” Voges added.
