While Ireland recently made their test debut against Pakistan, the other team to receive the status last year in July, Afghanistan is prepping up to enter the history books when they take on India later next month. It will be a monumental feat as the cricketers and management will be a part of something historic in terms of the nation’s cricketing ambitions.

The war-ravaged nation has come a long way ever since their inception, and the one-off Test against the numero uno Indian side seems like the perfect way to cap off something so memorable.

While the Afghanistan management is excited about the upcoming endeavour, head coach Phil Simmons has expressed disappointment over Virat Kohli skipping the fixture. Kohli won’t be present in the opponent camp as the 29-year-old decided to play county cricket ahead of the much important England tour later in the year.

Speaking of Kolhi’s absence, Simmons was quoted saying in an interview with Sportsarlive, “I think all of us are disappointed because you want to play against Virat Kohli who undoubtedly is the best batsman in the world right now. Naturally, all the players were looking forward to it and are disappointed but at the same time they know that any team BCCI put in front of us we have to work hard. So we are looking forward to it, but a little bit disappointed.”

Kohli doesn’t have the best of records in England

It should be noted that Virat Kohli had a poor outing against England in the 2014 tour where he scored just 134 runs in 5 tests at an average of 13.4. This series raised eyebrows regarding his selection in the longer format of the game. And Kohli will be hoping a stint with Surrey stands him in good stead to inspire the tourists in a five-match series, which starts on August 1.
