When Pakistan last won a Test match on Australian soil, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly were still a year away from making their International debut; West Indies were still unbeaten at home for fifteen years; T20 revolution was still eight years away; Sachin Tendulkar had just a handful of ODI hundreds; social media was still a decade away. 1995. Yup, It’s been that long!

And, since then Pakistan sides- with more accomplished names than the current touring party and boasting of the likes of Saeed Anwar, Inzamam Ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Younus Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar – have turned up on Australian shores only to be shellacked with disdain and authority. Following their latest defeat- by an innings and 48 runs- Pakistan has now lost 14 Tests on the bounce on Australian soil- a World record for consecutive defeats in a particular country.

The previous record-holders were Bangladesh who had succumbed to 13 back-to-back defeats between 2001-2004 on their home turf. Not only this, but Pakistan has also created another unwanted record. They now hold the dubious feat of most consecutive defeats on Australian soil with 14 losses between 1995 and 2019.

The previous record was jointly held by India and West Indies who lost nine on the bounce between 1948 and 1977 and 2000 and 2009 respectively. They were followed by England, who lost eight games twice between 1920 and 1925 & 2013 and 2017 and South Africa with the same number of defeats between 1911 and 1952.

Pakistan has won only two matches under Misbah-ul-Haq as coach

During Pakistan’s 2016-17 tour (which they lost 0-3), the likes of Ian Chappel had stirred up a controversy when he had said that teams like Pakistan should not be invited to Australian shores considering the lack of competitive nature of the games.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has won only a couple of International games post the World Cup. Since Misbah-ul-Haq took over as coach cum chief selector, the Men in Green have proceeded to lose eight of the 11 fixtures across formats- and will be under severe pressure to revive their fortunes when they take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series on home soil.
