After demanding a fitness test post his axing, Angelo Mathews passes yo-yo test

Sri Lankan cricket is in doldrums since the 2015 World Cup and the recent Asia Cup debacle has only worsened the things for them. To add to the agony, Angelo Mathews being sidelined from the ODIs controversially hasn’t gone down well with the many. He was termed not fit for 50-over cricket by the coach Chandika Hathurusingha recently. However, the cricketer has proved everyone wrong and has comfortably cleared the yo-yo fitness test ahead of the Test series against England.

Mathews was blamed for Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the Asia Cup where they lost easily to Bangladesh and Afghanistan and were knocked out in the group stage itself. He was also asked to step down from the captaincy and despite being the consistent run-getter since 2017. Mathews has amassed 888 runs in 22 innings at a healthy average of 59.20 which proves that he has been the rock of the team.

Angelo Mathews had demanded a fitness test to be conducted after all the allegations against about not being fit to play the shorter format. He himself revealed the news of clearing the yo-yo test early on Tuesday by posting a picture. He also managed to come out on top of skin-fold test which is yet another fitness test and will be raring to go perform in the upcoming Test series against England.

As far as the ongoing ODI series between England and Sri Lanka is concerned, the hosts are expectedly struggling. After the first match was washed out, the second one was also interrupted by rain but the World number 1 ODI side had inflicted enough damage until then. They won by 31 runs according to the DLS method and took the lead by 1-0. Sri Lanka are clearly missing their most experienced campaigner Mathews in the middle-order and it remains to be seen if he is recalled to the side.
