After getting dropped from the Test side in Australia, I started worrying about my technique: Prithvi Shaw

Life has thrown many twists and turns on Prithvi Shaw in the last few months and he has already seen a lot in a short career in international cricket. Considered to be India’s next best thing, Shaw made his spot inside the team at a tender age.

In November 2018, when he made his Test debut, he announced his arrival in style, hitting a century on debut to become the youngest player from India to achieve the feat. A year later, he was found to have used a prohibited substance, although unintentionally, which led him to face a 6-month suspension as a punishment for doping.

Shaw surpassed the challenge but more came his way as he got dropped from the Indian Test side in Australia due to his technical flaws. He recorded scores of 0 and 4 in India’s horrific defeat in the day-night Adelaide Test. The 21-year-old took all of it as it came but refused to give up and worked hard on his game, and his hard work paid off in form of a record-breaking Vijay Hazare Trophy season (827 runs with three 150+ scores, including a double-century)

“After getting dropped from the Test side after the first Test in Australia, I started worrying about my technique on why I was getting bowled. Even if it was a minor mistake, I wanted to minimize that. I started working on it there itself,” said Shaw after Delhi Capitals’ (DC) win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2021.

“I worked on my initial movement – getting more stable and more ready before the bowler has bowled. After returning from Australia, I worked with my coach Prashant Shetty sir and also Pravin Amre sir before going to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and it worked quite well. I played my natural game in Vijay Hazare Trophy, but I made a small technical change. After that, it’s going well,”.

“After coming from Australia, I remained worried about my batting. I worked hard and rectified things and got runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. I didn’t get a lot of practice for IPL, the T20 format. But I got good practice sessions with Ricky Ponting sir, Pravin Amre sir and Prashant Shetty sir”, he added.

Shaw has left everyone impressed in the ongoing season of the IPL, most during his match-winning 38-ball 72 against Chennai Super Kings in his team’s opening game.
