Pakistan were stunned twice in Abu Dhabi by New Zealand in the recently concluded three-match Test series. The Kiwis managed to triumph against them in an away series for the first time in 49 years. Despite bagging a lead of 74 runs in the decider, the hosts let go of the advantage and Sarfraz Ahmed’s captaincy has come under the scanner now.
Pakistan have now lost four of their last seven Tests in the UAE which is regarded as their home since last 10 years. Not long ago it was a fortress for them but since Sri Lanka series, it has been breached time and again by the visiting teams. Moreover, there has been some dissatisfaction within the board regarding Sarfraz’s captaincy style with him yelling at the players time and again.
If there is someone better then he should captain
Pakistan will soon embark on South Africa tour where they will play three Tests at the start and it won’t be an easy series by any stretch of the imagination. Sarfraz Ahmed realizes the same and believes that the intent should be positive before leaving for such a tough place. However, he also added that if there is a better player to lead the team in the longest format, then he should be appointed the skipper.
“If there is someone better than me to do the Test captaincy, then he should. Then things like this happen, you do start to think about it. But let’s see what happens. The tour of South Africa is a tough one and if you start thinking like this before it then it is not helpful for anyone,” he said while speaking to the reporters after the series loss.
Meanwhile, Head of Pakistan’s Cricket Committee, Mohsin Khan has made his opinion public about Sarfraz giving up his Test captaincy. Even Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sent the message to the skipper that there is no guarantee about his leadership role in the team and is kept on a series by series basis.
Speaking on the same, Sarfraz said, “If I make mistakes, or it is because of me that the team is losing then I will definitely think about it, and if there is someone better than me to do the Test captaincy, then he should.”
