After severe backlash, R Ashwin finally gets some support from a Former Aussie cricketer
A controversy sparked off after Jos Buttler became the first batsman to be 'Mankaded' in the IPL history.
The Kings XI Punjab got off to a winning start in the 2019 edition of the IPL. They beat Rajasthan Royals in their opening encounter of the season. While they would have appreciated the good wishes coming their way after the win, things have rather turned a little sour after the game. A controversy sparked off after Jos Buttler became the first batsman to be ‘Mankaded’ in the IPL history.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Buttler has been dismissed this way. Back in 2014, he was dismissed in the same manner in a fixture against Sri Lanka. Talking about the recent game, Buttler threatened to take the game away from the Kings and looked in sublime form with the bat. However, in the 13th over of the match, a wily Ravichandran Ashwin caught Buttler out of his crease when he reached the bowling stride.
He was quick to take the bails off and appeal. The replays confirmed that Buttler was out of his crease, and hence, was adjudged out by the umpires. He tried to talk to Ashwin about this, but Ashwin, caring only about getting Buttler out in whichever way possible, played a dead ear to Buttler’s words.
After the incident, the social media blasted Ashwin for his sportsmanship, or rather the lack of it. From Eoin Morgan to Jason Roy, from Dale Steyn to Mitch McClenaghan, everyone condemned Ashwin’s actions.
While the whole fraternity seems to be against Ashwin, there is one man who was quick to come out in support of the veteran Indian spinner. Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones came out in support of Ashwin and cited that it was indeed the right call to appeal. He pointed out at the law that states a batsman should not leave his crease at the non-strikers end until the bowler has released the ball.
Here is what Dean Jones had to say:
“Law 41.16 a batsmen at non strikers end should not leave his ground UNTIL the bowler has released the ball! SO OUT! Lesson.. batsmen watch the bowlers release the ball! #easy #SelectDugout,” Dean Jones tweeted.
