The pathetic batting display by the Indian batsmen in the first Test in England might make him look a bright prospect for the near future, but Mayank Agarwal is in no hurry to make it to the national team. The 27-year-old batsman, who slammed 220 for India ‘A’ against South Africa ‘A’ in the ongoing first unofficial Test in Bengaluru, said he just wanted to continue with his good batting form.

Agarwal was in a tremendous form last season, scoring more than 2,000 runs across tournaments. This year, too, he has continued with that form and has already picked up three List ‘A’ hundreds in England besides the latest double ton. However, the batsman from Bengaluru is not ready to think about achieving last year’s landmark.

The important thing is to stay in the present

“I am very happy with the way the season has begun and the way I am batting. But you cannot start the new season thinking that you have scored more than 2000 runs last season. Yes, you are confident that you have scored that many runs and you take that confidence into the new season, but you cannot take things for granted and you have to work your way up all over again,” Agarwal said, according to a Mid-Day.com report.

He said as a batsman, one needed to be persistent and make use of the form and confidence that he has. He mentioned he just wants to continue scoring the runs and focus on his India ‘A’ games at the moment.

“You play so many games, the important thing is to stay in the present. We are playing this and then we play the quadrangular. It’s all about focusing on the present,” he said.

India ‘A’ were in the driver’s seat in the four-day Test as the visitors were reduced to 99 for 4 in their second innings, trailing by another 239 runs at stumps on the penultimate day. They came out to bat after India ‘A’ declared their innings at 584 for 8, conceding a first innings lead of 338 runs.
