Gautam Gambhir, the former opener’s contribution for Indian cricket can never be forgotten. He was the one, who led the Men in Blue from the front in the final of the ICC World Cup 2011 and played a determined knock of 97 runs that played a major role in India’s triumph in the mega-event. But, sometimes his outspoken behaviour overshadows his achievements.
However, now Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) joint secretary Rajan Manchanda has come up with a surprising revelation that might delight Gambhir and his fans.
The 38-year-old bid adieu to international cricket back in 2018 after consistently getting neglected by the national selectors. He was a man of the finals and played some remarkable innings for Team India in his time with the national squad.
DDCA joint secretary come up with a revelation
In a recent development Rajan Manchanda, joint secretary of DDCA said that the council has approved a stand on the name of Gambhir and it could be unveiled before the upcoming Ranji season starts.
“The Apex Council had approved the stand in Gautam Gambhir’s name. It was to be near the stadium end (Ambedkar football stadium),” DDCA joint secretary said as quoted by Indian Express.
He also added that it is very unfortunate that the state cricket council of Delhi didn’t honour the left-handed former Indian opener for his contribution in cricket. It was just because of some disagreements between the members of the DDCA council. But, now the association has decided to felicitate Gambhir as soon as possible.
“It is unfortunate that we have not been able to honour the contribution of Gambhir to Indian cricket because of disagreements among members of the Apex Council. We had even ordered the large letters of his name to be put up on the stand. At today’s meeting of the Apex council members, it was decided to unveil the stand and felicitate Gambhir sooner than later,” he added.
Earlier, in September, during a function hosted at Jawaharlal Nehra, a stand in the Arun Jaitley stadium was inaugurated in the name of the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Before him, many former Indian cricketers have been honoured by the association in the same fashion like two stands were named on Bishen Singh Bedi and all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath followed by a gate on the name of Virender Sehwag.
