After winning Big Bash title, Australia skipper Aaron Finch looks forward to India series

Australia are set to reach India on Monday for a T20I and ODI series starting February 24 and they will be led by Aaron Finch. The Aussie though has had a tough few months over his batting woes in all formats of the game, yet he is not short of focus on the upcoming series after leading his team Melbourne Renegades to win the eighth edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). The opening batsman will be a confident skipper after securing a dramatic win over the Melbourne Stars led by Glenn Maxwell who also features in the Aussie squad.

Finch, who made his Test debut last year against Pakistan and has played 99 ODIs so far, struggled in the Test series against India Down Under before getting dropped. In the limited-over formats, too, he has struggled with his bat. If the 32-year-old has to make a successful defence of Australia’s World Cup title this year, he has to take a lot of care of his own form.

The Kangaroos have produced a series of World Cup-winning captains since Allan Border and Finch indeed has a truckload of expectations to meet if he gets confirmed for the top job in England and Wales.

Finch, who took over Australia’s ODI captain from Tim Paine recently, has not been quite in good touch although in the just-concluded BBL 8, the Victoria batsman showed glimpses of his lost touch. Finch was livid with himself after missing out from scoring big in the final and was sanctioned for smashing a chair after getting run out in the fun unluckily.

“It just about sums up my summer,” a smiling Finch said of the unlucky dismissal. The batsman though is not short of energy ahead of the India series which is also one of his team’s last major preparatory occasions ahead of the World Cup.

“I don’t think you need anything to put a pep in your step when you’re going on an Aussie tour, particularly to India,” Finch told the media, adding that getting even slightly off the mark against India in their home conditions would hurt them.

Australia will play two T20Is and five ODIs against India. They drew a three-match T20I series 1-1 against the same opponents Down Under but lost the Test and ODI series by identical margins: 1-2.
