‘Again missed his 71st’ – Twitterverse react as Virat Kohli perishes for 45 in 100th Test
Virat Kohli's last Test ton was recorded way back in November 2019.
Virat Kohli started well in his 100th Test match and was expected to celebrate the occasion with a massive knock. However, his drought for an international hundred continued as the 33-year-old perished after scoring 45 off 76 deliveries. Left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya castled his stumps as India lost their third wicket on Day 1. Needless to mention, Sri Lankan fielders were delighted while there was disappointment in the Indian camp.
Meanwhile, it was the third ball of the 43rd over and Kohli was looking well settled at the crease. It wasn’t really a special delivery as Embuldeniya landed the ball on good length and Kohli went on back foot to tackle the harmless-looking delivery. However, the 33-year-old couldn’t even touch the ball as his off-stump was disturbed.
Virat Kohli’s wait for the 71st international century extends
The former Indian skipper couldn’t believe his dismissal as he was gutted while walking back to the pavilion. Right after his dismissal, Twitter got flooded in no time as fans expressed their disappointment. Notably, Kohli has been far away from his best in the last couple of years. In fact, his last Test ton was recorded way back in November 2019.
As he is making his 100th Test appearance, many backed him to do well against a weak-looking Sri Lankan bowling attack. He even got off to an impressive start. However, Kohli couldn’t even touch the 50-run mark. Coming to how the game proceeded, the coin landed in India’s favour and Rohit Sharma had no hestitation in batting first.
India got off to a flying start with openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal attacking bowlers from the outset. However, none of the two were able to convert their start into a big score. India’s new number three Hanuma Vihari showcased remarkable resilience and slammed a brilliant half-century. However, he also got out at a personal score of 58. So far, the game looks pretty much balanced and it would be interesting to see how the remaining day pans out.
