Aiden Markram can be a part of South Africa’s World Cup plans: Faf du Plessis

With less than four months to go for the biggest cricket event of the year – the ICC World Cup, some of the teams are still trying to figure out the best playing combination for the best results. Some teams are still keeping an eye on domestic performances for selection in the 15-member World Cup squad. The Proteas are no different.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis recently hinted that Aden Markam’s performance in the domestic One-day Cup may get him a berth in the national squad to England. Markam’s international career has not been very extravagant, with an average of 25 in 16 ODIs. But his two latest scores – 139 and 169 in the momentum cup have impressed the South African skipper.

“He is by no means out of our plans,” Du Plessis told reporters after leading South Africa to an eight-wicket win in the first ODI against Sri Lanka. “If you look at the top five that’s here right now, it’s the five guys who have consistently been the biggest scorers over the last season – Aiden has had some really good opportunities in One-Day cricket. We know he is a better player than his figures over the 16 matches he’s played would say,” Faf added.

Markam may be included for the last two games against Sri Lanka as well

Plessis further reiterated that if Markam keeps piling up runs in the domestic ODI tournament, he might also find a place in the team for the last two matches against Sri Lanka.

“All Aiden must do is keep scoring runs, bash that door down and hopefully there will be an opportunity for him in the last two games of this series. And then (he needs) to step up and run with that form, and, Bob’s your uncle,” Du Plessis remarked.

Markram, who last played an ODI in November last year, also has the experience of leading the Proteas in five-match ODI series against India. South Africa play the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Durban on Sunday.
