South African opener Aiden Markram has managed to make a name for himself in very short span of time. The youngster was recently given the captaincy of the national side in the ODI series against India in the absence of the regular skipper. Certainly, his talent is fetching him a lot of accolades. In a recent move, a new assignment has come his way now.
Aiden Markram has signed a deal with team Durham for the upcoming 2018 English County Season. Last year, South African batsman Stephen Cook played for the Durham team. As per the recent reports in SAcricketmag, Aiden Markram is set to arrive in Emirates Riverside on time to feature in Durham’s first home match of the season against Kent on April 21. This match will be played after South Africa finishes their home assignments against the visiting Australian side.
Ian Botham happy with the signing
Meanwhile, former legendary English cricketer and also the chairman of the team Durham, Sir Ian Botham, has expressed his happiness to have Aiden Markram on the roster for the domestic season. He remarked that the availability of Markram in the squad has helped the team to negate the impact of losing out several other players for the first half of the season.
It is a known fact that players like Tom Latham, Ben Stokes, and Mark Wood have all been roped in on the IPL roster and hence, will not be playing in the County Championships during the months of April and May.
“Aiden offers confidence and maturity at the top of the batting order and despite being just 23 years old, he has already been recognised by South Africa as a leader in the dressing room,” Durham’s chairman Sir Ian Botham quoted.
“It’s great news that we will have Aiden at the beginning of our Championship campaign, especially with Tom Latham, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood all missing due to their international and IPL commitments. We’re delighted to have both Aiden and Tom at Emirates Riverside this season and I am confident they will both contribute to what we hope will be a successful season,” he added further.
