There is no denial of the fact that Mohammad Amir was one of the best fast bowlers to play for Pakistan in recent times. The left-hander was destined for greater things but he decided to put an abrupt halt to his career by announcing retirement in December 2020.
With his retirement, Amir also caused havoc in the Pakistan cricket fraternity as he accused the team management, including the likes of bowling coach Waqar Younis and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, of mentally harassing him and trying to destroy his career. The 29-year-old went on to say that he will make a comeback in the Pakistan team only when the current management leaves.
The accusations by Amir towards two veteran cricket personalities didn’t go down well with many people and one among them is former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal. In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, Ajmal opened up about Amir’s retirement fiasco saying the southpaw shouldn’t have hurled such massive accusations at Misbah and Waqar.
Though Ajmal admitted that he doesn’t know what happened between Amir and the management, he reckoned that it’s not right for a player to ask for the removal of a coach. Also, the veteran advised the speedster to focus on his bowling and prove his mettle as a bowler before making any demands.
“From what he is saying, it looks like he was dealt unfairly. But I don’t know what happened between him and team management behind the scenes. He is saying that he will only play for Pakistan after Misbah and Waqar leave their post as head coach and bowling coach,” Ajmal said.
If Mohammad Amir has made his decision to retire, then he should stick to it: Ajmal
“Aise logo ka aisa hi hota hai (such players suffer exactly this way). It is not right for a player to ask for the removal of a coach. Amir should focus on his performance and cement his place before making such demands,” he added.
Further in the interaction, Saeed Ajmal asserted that Amir made the decision of retiring from the game out of sheer desperation and now he shouldn’t think on the lines of making a comeback.
“Amir had given his retirement out of desperation but now he is thinking of coming back. If he has made his decision to retire, then he should stick to it,” Ajmal stated.
