Ajinkya Rahane joins elite list of Indians with twin centuries
Indian middle order batsman Ajinkya Rahane joined the elite list of Indians who have scored twin centuries in Test cricket after he smashed an unbeaten 100 in the 2nd innings following his 127 in 1st innings against South Africa at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi.
Other Indians in this list are legendary players like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid along with the current skipper Virat Kohli. Gavaskar achieved the record not just once but thrice in his career while Dravid did it twice.
Overall, Rahane’s two centuries in a Test is 8th such instance by an Indian player and is now registered as the 81st batsman to do so in international cricket records.
Rahane also became the 1st Indian to score 2 centuries in same Tests while batting at number 5 or lower in the order. In the overall records, only 8 other players have been able to score 2 centuries in the same Test while batting at number 5 or lower before Ajinkya Rahane did so today.
With the help of the 2 centuries, Rahane who averaged just 7.83 in India before this game, now has an average of 39.14. He has played 21 Test matches in his career before the ongoing and had scored 1392 runs at an average of 39.77 with 4 centuries and 7 fifties. Interestingly he had centuries in England, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka before getting to the triple-figures for the first time at home.
He did not take time to increase his hundred tally at home, and in the same match ensured he now has a couple of centuries in India as well to get rid of the non-consistent batsman tag.
