The first Test match at Vishakhapatnam saw Team India squash the Proteas by 203 runs. The win was another embodiment of modern-day Indian Test sides. No longer do they need raging turners to win at home with their fast bowlers being equally potent and equal to the task.
And, like his team, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane too is reveling in these good times which have now been made even better courtesy the birth of his baby-girl. He became a father on Saturday after his wife Radhika Dhopavkar gave birth to a baby-girl. Ironically, when his wife was bringing their baby into this world, Rahane was involved in the 1st Test at Vizag.
The right-hander celebrated the birth of his daughter with a flamboyant knock on Saturday, creaming four boundaries and a six in his 17-ball 27, helping India to get to the eventual match-winning target.

The past two months have been really good for Rahane. With him no longer a part of India’s white-ball set-up, questions had also begun to galore around his spot in the Test side. His indifferent form, his inability to convert the 50s-60s into three figures combined by a lack of support by the team-management at times, meant the Indian vice-captain needed a big tour of the Caribbean to quash all those discussions or questions that had begun to flourish around his place in the side.
But, as they say, adversity sometimes brings out the beast in one. Rahane’s form certainly did testify that during the two-match Test series in the Caribbean. While Jasprit Bumrah and the fast bowlers rightfully hogged the headlines, Rahane’s contribution, especially in the first Test at Antigua shouldn’t be forgotten.
Coming in at 3-25 on a tricky pitch against the likes of Kemar Roach and Jason Holder, Rahane dug deep to score a vital 163-ball 81 and along with Hanuma Vihari and Ravindra Jadeja lifted India to 297 before finally going on to register that elusive 10th Test hundred in the second innings, breaking a 24-month-drought and squashing all the chatter around his spot.
