India’s stand-in Test skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s form has been under big scrutiny as he has been failing back-to-back to bring something substantial with his bat. After his century in Melbourne during India’s Border Gavaskar Trophy last year, he has been able to bring only one fifty-plus score and is a matter of huge concern for the Indian side.
Former cricketer VVS Laxman recently opened up on Mumbai’s batter and added that despite his failure, he might get just one more chance in Mumbai Test to prove his worth. Laxman is of the belief that Rahane would be backed by skipper Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid for the next game before taking a harsh decision of him.
“Yes, it’s going to be a tough choice because of the way he batted, the way he rescued the innings. The way some of those batters got out in the morning session, it’s certainly a selection dilemma,” said Laxman while speaking to Star Sports.
“You want someone in Mumbai to play in good form. However, I think there is an unwritten rule that whoever is injured or whoever misses out. The senior player, in this case, Virat Kohli, will return and senior players Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara who haven’t been in great form, especially Ajinkya Rahane will still get one more chance in Mumbai. I don’t think Rahul Dravid or Virat Kohli will leave out Rahane.”
It will force the team to leave out someone who has had a fantastic debut: Laxman
However, Laxman made it a point to add that if Rahane is backed for the next Test, Shreyas Iyer who had a magnificent Test debut in Kanpur will be side-lined. Though it will be unfair with the new promising talent, it has been the rule of the current Indian side, mulled the former cricketer. India to play their Mumbai Test from December 03 at Wankhede Stadium.
“Unfortunately, it will force the team to leave out someone who has had a fantastic debut. It will be unfortunate but I think that has been the rule as far this Indian team is concerned,” Rahane concluded.
