Prithvi Shaw has had an incredible year thus far. He captained India U19 to their fourth title in the World Cup in New Zealand. He was also impressive with the willow and grabbed a number of eyeballs. Most importantly, he played under the tutelage of Rahul Dravid, who was the coach of the U19 team in the World Cup. Meanwhile, he fetched a whopping INR 1.20 crores to play in the IPL.
After strong performances in the cash-rich T20 tournament, he was roped into the India ‘A’ team for their tour of England. The 18-year-old piled three centuries and a couple of fifties to impress the selectors. Recently, he got his maiden international call-up for the last two Tests at The Rose Bowl and Kennington Oval in India’s ongoing five-match Test series against Joe Root and Co.
He is not going to promote him
Recently, Ajit Agarkar, the former Indian fast bowler and the Mumbai chief selector, believes that Dravid’s feedback for him has worked wonders for the youngster from Thane. He also feels that Dravid, being the character the veteran is, won’t promote Shaw in his career.
“If Rahul has given them the feedback, which I assume they would have sought, that’s all you would want to know. He is not going to promote him for his promise or age,” Agarkar was quoted as saying in Sportstar.
The Indian team stormed back at Trent Bridge in Nottingham to win the third Test by 203 runs. The Indian top order performed reasonably and Shaw may not immediately break into the eleven. But Agarkar reckons that even by rubbing shoulders with the big guns, Shaw can add to his repertoire as a cricketer.
“Even if he doesn’t get a game, just to be around the group and a happy change room will work wonders for him. I am sure this exposure will make him an even better batsman,” he added.
