Former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar reckons that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) need to take a different approach in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Both teams failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2020 with MS Dhoni’s CSK being the first team to be eliminated from the T20 tournament.

The Knights, led by Eoin Morgan, had a chance until the last league game but were eliminated after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat the Mumbai Indians (MI). For CSK, Agarkar was of the opinion that they need some restructuring. Talking about the Knights, Agarkar said that the team need to put their best foot forward, bearing in mind the number of match-winners they have.

Agarkar stated that the turmoil in the KKR camp was pretty palpable after Dinesh Karthik handed over captaincy duties to Morgan. He put forth his opinions while speaking on Star Sports’ show Cricket Connected.

KKR were in better positions, says Ajit Agarkar

“I think there are a couple of teams, CSK certainly need a little bit of restructuring. But the one team I hope plays better or plays a bit more consistently, is KKR. I think KKR certainly has a lot of match-winners in them or T20 specialists if you like. They should be doing a lot better.

Though Morgan performed reasonably well with the bat in hand, the southpaw couldn’t quite shine as the captain. Agarkar hopes for a bit more consistency from the Knights and wants them to stick to a single skipper throughout the season.

“There were in better positions, changed the captain for some reason midway through and you could see that there was something not right in the camp. I think it has happened before as well and somehow, they scraped through to the playoffs.

“They have got far too good a team to be as inconsistent, T20 format is very difficult to be consistent, but they have got far too good a team to be that. So, I hope they get those things right. And especially, get the leadership, whoever it is and stick to it during the course of the season,” he added.

The Knights were edged out by the Sunrisers on the basis of a superior run rate. KKR ended their campaign with a thumping victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
