England sent out a big warning to Test-playing nations after defeating World Test champions New Zealand by 3-0 at home yesterday. The way the English side approached every match and their new attacking-minded style has garnered a lot of attention from the cricketing world. England head coach Brendon McCullum, who is receiving a lot of credit for this sudden transformation from the squad, feels that it will be exciting and fun to face a new opponent.

England made big managerial changes before the New Zealand series after winning just once since the start of 2021. Ben Stokes replaced Joe Root as captain and the former Kiwi ace replaced Chris Silverwood as head coach. McCullum cleared his vision of playing red-ball cricket with an attacking approach before the series and the result was outstanding.

It’ll be quite good fun to look at a new opponent: Brendon McCullum

England scored runs at a run rate of 4.54, the highest by any team in a Test series (minimum of five innings). Root scored 396 runs at a strike rate of 74.15, Jonny Bairstow scored 394 runs at 120.12, and Stokes scored 194 runs at 82.55. McCullum shared that he is looking forward to the India challenge and also pointed out that this is how this team is going to play.

“It’ll be quite good fun to look at a new opponent. The world test champions were a formidable opponent to overcome and the alarm bells have probably gone off somewhat around world cricket as to how this team is going to play. We need to make sure against a different opposition we’re well researched, well planned, well prepared for that, and try and roll out a similar kind of performance. Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s enjoy the moment and see what unfolds in the next little while. It’s exciting,” Brendon McCullum said after the Headingley Test as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Now England face a totally different challenge in the form of India, who are scheduled to play the last and the fifth Test match at Edgbaston on the 1st of July. India, who rank second in the ICC Test teams chart, are leading the series by 2-1. But England’s new approach has made them favourites to win the last Test match against India. The visitors are missing their captain Rohit Sharma at the moment due to Covid-19 and his deputy KL Rahul due to a groin injury.
